J.P. Howell

Is it safe to assume that he is the closer in TB? He's gotten the last two saves. I'd like to use him in my weekly H2H league this week.

Seems like a no-brainer to me...he's clearly the best pitcher in the Rays' pen. No word from the Tampa camp yet though. Here's to hoping Maddon doesn't overthink things and goes with the guy who gives his team the best chance to preserve leads in a full-time role.

Based on how Maddon used his bullpen over the last week I'd say that Howell is now the "main man". He has consistently got the job done and I suspect he'll be the guy for the remainder of the season. The Rays will probably make a move during the offseason to get an experienced closer.

They've also used him in situations recently where you wouldn't use your closer, like brining him into a game you're losing. He might be the favorite, but that he's made these other types of appearances has me thinking Tampa might not want him in the role if they could come up with another option via a trade.

Although Tampa management went on record last week as saying that, if they are to make trades in the next month. it wouldn't be for a closer.

Name me one closing option who would be available in a trade that would be better than Howell...

There are options rumored to be out there like Valverde & Jenks but to me the question is does TB want to pay for an established closer.

There was some tussle about this going on in the Closers thread some while back, with a contingent that was pretty confident Howell was the guy, and another contingent that kept insisting that Maddon loves playing matchups. I think it's safe to say that the Howell contingent won.
