ESPN Starting Pitcher Rankings

Postby LloydChristmas » Sat Jun 20, 2009 3:09 pm

I know there's been a lot of A.J. Mass criticism here and I really can't help but jump on his back too. His starting pitcher rankings for tomorrow (Sunday, June 21st) are very suspect. For example:

Wandy Rodriguez at 10 (out of 30) AT Minnesota. Perhaps the poorest kept secret in all of fantasy baseball is how bad he's been away this year and how good he's been at home. His ERA has also skyrocketed to over 7 in June. The Twins are a fairly good hitting team also (22 out of 30 in the most recent Cafe rankings by Jake Sheets for good pitcher matchups).

To continue, a struggling Chris Volstad against the Yankees favored over such matchups as Doug Davis at Seattle (2nd best matchup according to Sheets' rankings). And perhaps my biggest question is that he has Ricky Romero at Washington at 26 out of 30. He's been solid in his last three starts with an ERA of 3.10 in June (3.73 YTD) and is facing a rather poor hitting Nationals team.

He cites things such as "Doug Davis is 2-5 with a 5.76 ERA against the Mariners". He hasn't pitched against the Mariners this year. In fact, he hasn't pitched against Seattle since 2004! How does this even make sense to use these stats to rate his start against a completely different lineup than the one he last pitched against FIVE YEARS AGO?!

How dare you mock AJ Mass. He's the Stephen Strasburg of fantasy analysts.

Check your facts. The Nations actually are average this year, ranking #15 in OPS.

Not sure I'm sold on starting Davis in this game either. I suspect Mass' rankings on Davis had something to do with Arizona's so-so offense and the fact that Davis will be opposing Felix Hernandez. A win seems on the unlikely side.

Actually that's not entirely true. He was plenty decent away this year until recently when he got creamed in his last 2 road starts. However, historically he is bad on the road far more often then not so I wouldn't start him at MIN. In fact I wouldn't start him on the road again unless he can regain the early season road magic.

As for AJ Mass, I'm not sure how he got his job because he is horrible. He gives the worst advice on ESPN bar none and only Matt Berry is close to as bad as AJ. If you do the opposite of what AJ says you'll be doing the right thing more often then not.

Check your facts. It's the Nationals. Or Natinals, if you prefer.

I think he's even worse as a football analyst. He's the biggest Redskins homer I've ever seen, putting Portis as his #6 overall RB... :-P

Well I'm not into football so I'll take your word for it. On another note it looks like AJ was right today, Wandy was on fire. I guess by sheer dumb luck he's bound to be right once in a while.

More A.J. Mass Fun from today's ESPN Chat:

Ray (VA)

What do you think about a B.J. Upton for Billingsley deal? should I be asking for more for Upton? Thanks

AJ Mass (11:31 AM)

Again, this comes down to every team's situation being unique. Yes, I just wrote an article where I state that SPs have far less value than hitters. However, if you can gain 20 points in your pitching standings by gaining Billingsley and lose only a handful without BJ Upton's numbers, you'd be foolish not to do it. I'd trade Roy Halladay for Willy Taveras if all I needed to win my title was a few extra steals...

FAIL.
