Carlos Mármol and Kevin Gregg

Postby jake_twothousandfive » Tue Jun 16, 2009 10:20 am

12 team roto league. Hitting cats: R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG...Pitching cats: W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP

I've had both Kevin Gregg and Carlos Mármol for the entire season. I've just been waiting and waiting for Piniella to come to his senses and do what anyone else would have done at the start of the year by inserting his best RP at closer. But, over two months in, it has yet to happen.

Gregg has shown durability throughout his career and he carries so little trade value a move seems highly unlikely. A change is starting to look less-and-less likely, so I've starting toying with the idea of just cutting Mármol loose. There are some decent RPs available that look to have better save opportunites than Mármol and I could also use the open roster spot to plug hitters in on off days (I've been getting behind in my hitting limits).

But if Mármol starts closing, he'd probably be a top 10 closer right off the bat. It's difficult to give up that potential. But it doesn't make sense to carry deadweight either. What should I do with him? Try to package him and Gregg in a trade? Just drop him?

Leave a LINK and I Will return the favor.

In my opinion it will be a hard sell to try to package him in a trade except if it is just kind of a side note addition, even then most players I think would drop him because the don't look as far down the road as you do. You're hurting your productions in saves by keeping him at this point. I would drop him and pickup someone who is producing but watch him like a hawk, especially the headlines. Yahoo's "closing Time" article that comes out periodically would be one to watch and if Piniella finally starts using him as his closer jump on it. I doubt anyone will pick him up while he isn't a closer, the potential is there but that is all it is at this point.

Thanks for helping with mine.

Jake, thanks for responding to mine.

I think Pinella has a soft spot for Gregg, this was the same story as it was last year. If you were thinking of droping Marmol, right now would be a good time, Gregg has been pretty ideal lately going un-scored on over his last five outings and in 16 of his last 18. Included was a two-inning stint last Thursday at Houston.

However looking over your roster, im not crazy about Hanson especially while having the pitching staff u have right now. If theres a starting closer somewhere in the waiver wire I would drop Hanson and keep Marmol b/c you never know what the cubs could do at the trade deadline.

Marmol has not looked very good as of late. I would drop him because I doubt you will get what you want for him and Gregg. Who is on the WW?

Well LaTroy Hawkins was just dropped. I have a 2-for-1 trade that's currently pending right now, but it won't finalize until after Hawkins clears waivers. I'm pretty sure a preemptive move will be necessary for me to get him. So I was thinking of just dropping Marmol for Hawkins and using the open roster spot from the trade for a hot bat.

i think Hawkins is the answer. Drop Marmol for Hawkins. Pickup Hawkins saves in the mean time. When you have the open roster spot you always grab the hot hitter or even pick Marmol back up (i'm pretty sure at the time he still won't have the closer title)

For me i always like at least one open or movable roster spot for hot pickups

I have Gregg too. The Cub don't seem to provide a lot of save opportunities, so holding onto a speculative closer from their team seems not worth it. I'd refer Rafeal Soriano if he is there or R. Madsen (probably snatched up already).

without knowing the available RPs its difficult to give an opinion, but in general a setup RP isnt worth that much in trade negotiations, especially someone so unstable as marmol

if you have been with both for 2 months, stick with them unless there´s someone who is actually closing on the WW

Weren't the Cubs talking about removing Marmol from the 8th inning role recently? Drop him.
