Johan Santana got rocked today. Time for some useless trivia

Postby RynoDyno » Sun Jun 14, 2009 6:34 pm

The 9 ER that Johan gave up against the NYY today got my attention. Can you guess when the last time was that he gave up that many ER in the regular season?

click and drag your mouse below for the answer or double click somewhere in the post if you use IE...

NEVER. So it's a trick question, but it just goes to show how dominating he's been since becoming a full time starter in 2003.

Since 2003 , he started 199 games and has given up 5 or more ER only 14 times.
9 ER 1
8 ER 0
7 ER 3
6 ER 5
5 ER 5

2009:
9 ER 1
5 ER 1

2008:
5 ER 1

2007:
6 ER 2

2006:
5 ER 1

2005:
7 ER 1
6 ER 2

2004:
7 ER 1
6 ER 1

2003:
7 ER 1
5 ER 2

He's given up 7 ER three times since 2003, and the last time was May 17, 2005.

Just to compare to another ace, I did a quick count on Halladay and I think he gave up 5 or more ER 35 times since 2003 in 186 GS. So what's the point? There's not one really. Like I said, just useless trivia. Oh, and yeah, I guess he's pretty good.

Hell yeah. Show me someone who doesn't and I will show you a communist. In fact, I'm pretty sure North Korea's Kim Jong Il has had some people imprisoned for watching Jeopardy. Nothing makes him angrier than hearing "I'll take Potpourri for $200, Alex."

Halladay blew up like this in 2007. Like twice over the course of 3 starts. It happens to the best of them.

Time for Santana to go get some work in the minors until he gets his confidence back.

I'm surprised he wasn't sent to rookie ball right after the game. Obviously he's forgotten how to pitch.

Just glad I dropped him for Edwin Jackson back in April.

Actually, the obvious thing to do with Johan is put him in the bullpen in the 8th inning role.

Yeah, it is nice when you need to actually think back to a couple of years ago for when your ace was last completely destroyed. Johan and Halladay are the only ones who may not even get crushed like this once in a season whereas any other ace gets rocked several times a season. Of course, that's why they're clearly the top 2 starters in baseball.
