Probably not the coolest move to join a public league that I have no intention of paying attention to, purely to do a test run before my real drafts. But anyway . . .
It wound up being of dubious help to me, it was comical how late I was able to draft some guys. A lot of it had to do with the fact that a few didn't show up and didn't seem to do much player ranking, and the yahoo default picks are awful. Still, it was fun to make out so well, hope it doesn't hurt me when I draft with more sharks in the water. Here's my final team, 12 team 5x5, drafting 3rd overall:
c- phillips, 1b - sweeney, 2b- soriano, 3b- teixiera, ss- matsui, OFs Mags, Abreu, and Berkman, Util - Alex Sanchez, bench - Ensberg and Millar. SPs - Vazquez, Beckett, Webb, Peavy, Hampton, J Williams RPs - Dotel, Cordero, Baez, Julio (it's weird, I get to start two Sps, two Rps, than three Ps, I'll probably lock in 3 closers total before I start ignoring the league)
P.S. The funniest part is that yahoo offers a choice of beginner and competitive public leagues, I can't even imagine what beginner is like

Second your team is decent but I don't think it is all you make it out to be.
Third maybe you won't pay attention due to not wanting to be embarassed by losing in a public league.
First, get off your high horse and get a life. I think it's a safe bet that the people who didn't draft live or rank players won't be active managers either, at least I put some effort into my draft.
Second, I followed the LIMA strategy essentially and as far as I can tell I'll be top tier in all the hitting cats, maybe middle of the road on average, but you never know. If I actually paid attention during the season and picked up hot free agent starting pitchers so I wasn't relying so much on young up and comers, I think I'd be damn strong in pitching as well with the base I have already. How am I
wrong about this?
Third, if this site keeps old enough archives, maybe I'll dredge this thread back up at the end of the season to post how I wound up doing.
Ha, good point. But I think there's a noticeable population of type A personalities who take things a little TOO seriously 'round here . . . you all know who you are!
Everybody hates being in a league with 50% inactive players, so of course people are kinda pissy that you are one of the people that causes that.
Really, I think you should go ahead and pay some attention to the team, and let us know how it looks at the end of the season. It looks decent, pretty good hitting, but your relievers are middle-of-the-pack in my opinion, and relievers are often what makes a good team in Yahoo. I think you could possibly win the league, but more likely finish around 3rd.
If you've taken the time to draft a team, and actually like the team, why not follow it through the season and see if you can win with it?
wrong forum.
this is the same thing as rating a team.
that being said, i have to agree about being able to steal people late in drafts in yahoo public leagues. i bet the averge draft postion of Kaz matusi in Yahoo public leagues is around the 16th-17th rounds.
