The book had a ton of fantastic imagery that the film just couldn't possibly reproduce. The movie did have Jack Nicholson, but sometimes (rarely) that's just not enough.
Speaking of which, what's the opinion on The Shining? I've never read the book but I saw both the original film and the 2000-ish miniseries.

Movie and book are both awesome but both pale in comparison to the Simpsons episode.
