So the Monfarts have drafted their own Son in the 47th round of the MLB Draft. If you were that kid wouldn't you be embarrassed.
The Rockies drafted Sterling Monfort, son of owner Dick Monfort, in the 47th round, and two rounds later took Mark Tracy, son of manager Jim Tracy. The A's picked Christopher O'Dowd, oldest son of Colorado GM Dan O'Dowd, in the 40th round.
"I know there are kids out there more talented than my son, but he's worked hard and been a great teammate," Dick Monfort said.
Not because he was drafted, but I'd be embarrassed by that quote. I'd want to be treated like any other amateur ballplayer.
The Sox drafted Kenny Williams's son last year (? -- or the year before?), but Williams said he stayed out of ranking/drafting him. I'm okay with that sort of thing. It's not unusual for kids in baseball families to have enough talent to be drafted -- but you want to know that you're being drafted because of talent, not in spite of it.
The quote is pretty terrible, congrats on spoiling the kid. He could of took it as motivation (some Strasburg kid wasn't drafted) not being selected and gone to college determined.
I don't see what the big deal is. Let's say he has enough talent to get drafted somewhere, even if several rounds later. At this point, so late in the draft where everything is a crapshoot, wouldn't you pay a small premium to have your own blood within your organization and not someone else's?
If nothing else, it's useful to the management: they get feedback on the lower tiers of farm system from someone they can absolutely trust.
The Cardinals have had two coaches sons on the MLB team in the last 5 years. Chris Duncan (who actually has some talent) and Cody McCay (who was one of the worst players ever)
Yeah, that quote is pretty bad, but otherwise I think it happens alot since the baseball draft is so deep and by then I'm sure it's just a crapshoot. Wasn't Mike Piazza drafted as a favor to someone?
Coaches are different but the Monfarts have nothing to do with baseball other then owning a team. Plus how many rounds are there? Isn't it saying something that he just happened to be drafted by his father
