Hmm. This is tough. I like all of them. I'd have to rank them like this.

Markakis
Upton
Bay
Holliday

I might move up Holliday depending on if/when he gets traded. If he goes somewhere good, I'd move him ahead of Bay.

Heres mine

Honestly man I couldn't pick between Bay and Markakis, I would say they are equal.

Almost the same with the other 2, I like Holliday a little more right now.

I'll say:

1a. Jason Bay
1b. Nick Markakis
2. Matt Holliday
3. BJ Upton

Bay
Markakis
Holiday
Upton

Bay gets the nod over Markakis only because of his supporting cast. I thin Markakis has slightly better overall skill set.

When I see BJ Upton, I start to think of Rocco Baldelli. All the tools, but never reached full potential. Baldelli can blame injury. I don't know what the excuse for Upton is.

3) Matt Holliday
4) BJ Upton

I'm a Bay fan, it's the Canadian Homer in me I think. Bay and Markakis are both great. I can't put on above the other.

Markakis, Holliday, Bay, Upton for me.

I'm sure Bay is younger than he seems to me as someone who remembers him as a Padres prospect (Never fear, Giles was sure worth it, ugh), but I can't shake the feeling that in a long-term keeper he has to be downgraded as a guy who isn't going to get better than he is right now.

That said, you've got to have legitimate concerns the same is true of Holliday never again reaching his Colorado numbers or Upton being a power threat again, so to a certain extent I think you can reasonably differ on which of those three you're highest and lowest on.

Markakis seems like the surest bet here to me. I just don't see the downside, young guy who's already producing at the level of the rest of the guys listed and could get even better.

By the way, I intentionally avoided looking at the other responses before posting this so as I hit post I'm now about to be really curious whether everyone thinks my order is stupid or if I'm close to the consensus. :-b

It depends how you want to define long-term. Bay is having a monster season and is certainly keeper worthy, but is a FA to be and will be 31 later this year. Markakis is only 25 and also a proven keeper. Upton is 24 and has the talent and potential, but still unproven as a legit keeper. Holliday is a FA to be and 29 years old, he was a stud in CO, but if you look at his OAK numbers they are consistent with his road splits while in CO. Is a 25% drop off still keeper worthy??

Based on your question...I think Markakis is clearly the best long-term keeper based on age and track record. And depending if you believe in BJ or not...followed by Upton, Bay & Holliday.
