is there a reason why Mike Gonzales pitched the 8th and Soriano came in and got the save? isn't it usually the other way around?

Since I own Soriano, hopefully because Soriano will be the new closer.

I don't know why, though I think there was a thread about it last night.

hmm i searched for that thread.. couldn't find it... ya i am a Soriano owner too but just traded him away tonight for a closer and am gonna feel like a nummer if he takes over the job.. dont see why he would though Gonzo has been prettty damn good too.. i'm thinking that they might just use them both cuz they're both sick

Well, I'd say no setup man has pitched better than Soriano, but Gonzalez hasn't screwed up anything that I know of, so maybe he just mixed it up based on what hitters were being faced. I think he did that earlier in the season once.

Sometimes they bring in Gonzalez for key left handers. The batters due up in the 8th for the Pirates were Nyger Morgan, Delwyn Young, and Adam LaRoche. Morgan and LaRoche are both lefties and Young is a switch hitter who has been slightly better against righties this year.

Honestly, if you have Gonzalez and Soriano is available, pick him up. After today, Soriano's ERA is below 1, as is his WHIP. He gets K's at a very good rate as well.

gonzalez comes in against key lefties. gonzo is the "closer" but soriano will get a good share.

Rafael Soriano recorded a save in a 4-2 win over the Phillies on Sunday while Mike Gonzalez pitching the eighth inning.

With Ryan Howard, Raul Ibanez, and Matt Stairs due up in the eighth it was the proper, and refreshing, move to go to the left handed Gonzalez then. Soriano does have three saves on the season, but he's still clearly second in the pecking order.
