madson or not?

Postby dubstar » Tue Jun 09, 2009 4:02 pm

I just picked up mike gonzalez after he cleared waivers. Should I stick with him or go for madson? I think madson can get more chances, but will only be in there for a couple weeks.... Maybe more though.

Gonzalez and Soriano already have been sharing time. Gonzalez closes out when there's primarily lefties, Soriano closes out when there's primarily righties to face.

Madson will be out there every save opp. for the phillies until Lidge comes back. And he's a damn good relief pitcher. If you can have both madson and gonzalez, i'd do that.

I'd take Gonzo if I could only have one. He's really not "splitting time" with Soriano. He does pitch in the eighth on occasion when a lefty-filled heart of the lineup is up, but he's really getting four out of every five opps or so.

That being said, Madson's been lights out. If you want to take the chance that Lidge will take his sweet time getting back, it's not a terrible idea.

Madson will be the better bet while Lidge is out than Gonzalez. Maybe the owner of Aardsma didn't read the news today about Morrow going to AAA to go back in the rotation. That means Aardsma will be the man w/ no competition. He might be the best bet of the 3 and you might be able to trade for him for cheap.
