Ubaldo minus 3 Starts in April = Amazing

Postby acsguitar » Mon Jun 08, 2009 1:47 pm

Ubaldo had 3 straight starts in April where he gave up 16 runs in 11.3 IP. He walked 14 and K's 11 During that time.

Scraping those 3 starts in a row and including the 1st of the season Ubaldo's stats would be:

In 61.9 IP (since we aren't counting those 3 starts):
55 K's/17BB's
2.33 ERA
1.115 WHIP

Also, the kid (25 Years Old) has only let up 2 HR's ALL YEAR!
Taking into account his bad starts
His GB% is 53.1 % which is 9th Best in the League
His BABIP is .327 Which isn't too high I don't believe or too low.

Anyways this kid is a STUD. Everyone should own him
I'm too lazy to make a sig at the moment

I picked him up after someone dropped him after that last horrible outing. Guy has amazing stuff and plays against some bad offenses in the NL. Probably my best pickup of the year so far.
Here's the pitch on the way, a swing and a belt! Left field! Way back! BLUE JAYS WIN!

Throws a 95mph fastball with some downward action, a 85mph slider, a 85mph change and a 75mph curveball. He has a good assortment of pitches and coupled with his improving control, he is a guy I really like for the future. A lot of fantasy players still avoid COL pitchers like the plague, but with a low HR/9 and his gb tendencies, Ubaldo has skills that play well in that park. I've been waiting for a breakout for a few years, and perhaps he has finally started to turn a corner.

Some starts his fastball hangs around 97mph...definitely has excellent stuff and looks to have drastically improved his BB rate in May and June. His 3.15 FIP indicates some bad luck as well.

He broke out last year with an impressive run down the stretch months of July-August-September. I was too impatient with him after having him on my team last year and released him early on after his troubles this year, but yeah, this kid is legit.

A reminder for those of you who missed it Ubaldo's amazing stretch last year in those months:

98.2IP, 3.57ERA, 1.36WHIP, 97Ks, 10W, 4L.

Oh another thing is that Pedro is his hero and apparently the two are friends now. He talks to Pedro after every game apparently. I'd love to see the rox's grab Pedro and turn him into a player/pitching coach

Whats FIP?

It's basically is an adjusted ERA calculation which attempts to find out what a pitcher's ERA would be solely based on elements within the pitcher's control...ie. defense is removed from the calculation.

what fezzik said ^

and some details...

hardballtimes.com wrote:FIP (Link)
Fielding Independent Pitching, a measure of all those things for which a pitcher is specifically responsible. The formula is (HR*13+(BB+HBP-IBB)*3-K*2)/IP, plus a league-specific factor (usually around 3.2) to round out the number to an equivalent ERA number. FIP helps you understand how well a pitcher pitched, regardless of how well his fielders fielded. FIP was invented by Tangotiger.
