Jose Mesa - closing?

Postby Rapps5 » Mon Mar 15, 2004 7:18 pm

whats the deal with mesa? will he be closing for sure? if not, what are his odds? I just picked him out of free agency and I'm wondering if was a wise move or not...

hmmm, i would probably put him back in there.
if urbina signs with the pirates you are screwed, cuz then he has negative value! if urbina doesnt sign with them, i can still see him losing his job somewhere.

appearantly, he showed up in very good shape to pirate training camp...there isnt much else left in free agency, so I mine as well take a chance on mesa until he screws up...he's owned in 92% of ESPN leagues...

Mesa closing sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

Third Baseman: Hank Blalock
Shortstop: Jose Reyes
Outfielder: Carlos Beltran
Outfielder: Aubrey Huff (1B, 3B, OF)
Outfielder: Luis Gonzalez
Outfielder: Corey Paterson
Outfielder: Alex Sanchez
2B/SS: Bill Mueller (2B/3B)
1B/3B: Dimitri Young (3B/OF)
Utility: Kevin Millar (1B/OF)
Pitcher: Pedro Martinez
Pitcher: Tim Hudson
Pitcher: Randy Johnson
Pitcher: Matt Morris
Pitcher: Livan Hernandez
Pitcher: Arthur Rhodes

Pitcher: Joe Nathan
Pitcher: Jose Mesa
Bench: Adam Kennedy (2B)
Bench: Jay Payton (OF)
Bench: Shingo Takatsu (P)
DL: A.J. Burnett (P)*
* = player inactive due to injury

the only potential free agents who MAY close are: Hasegawa, Felix Rodriguez, Tim Worrell, Tom Gordon, and Luis Ayala. To my knowledge, they are all second string closers and setup men.

Man...I dunno, you've got a deep league. What the heck...you can bail if he doesn't work out.

mesa has looked dead before and bounced back with a decent season. he might have enough left in the tank for a decent year but i wouldnt count on it. worth a shot though.
