Too Much Arm not enough Lumber?

Postby BigBlueSwami » Mon Mar 15, 2004 6:53 pm

I'm in a 10 team, head-to-head league with 3 SP, 2 RP, 3 any pitchers, 1 of each position player and 1 utility with 7 bench of any kind. Here's what I drafted:

Pitchers:
SP- Mark Prior, Roy Halladay, Javier Vazquez
RP-John Smoltz & Danny Kolb
Any Pitcher-Mark Mulder, Joel Piniero & Brandon Webb
Bench-Kaz. Ishii, Edwin Jackson & Ryan Wagner

Batters:
C-Mike Piazza
1B-Jason Giambi
2B-Marcus Giles
SS- Rich Aurilia
3rd-Hank Blalock
RF-Magglio Ordonez
CF-Scott Podsednik
LF-Raul Ibanez
Util-Richard Hidalgo
Bench-Daren Erstad, Shannon Stewart, Josh Phelps, Jason Phillips

I kept telling myself to get a bat but every few rounds there was a good arm that seemed like it shouldn't have slipped that low. I feel like I've got decent power from my "non-power" positions but I don't feel like I have that big HR/RBI bat and was thinking of packaging Vazquez or Mulder with a bat to try to upgrade. How's my chances with what I got as is?

how about trading mulder +1? for berkman. Or Vazquez for Vernon wells.

mulder is recovering from hip problems and Vazquez has never been in the big city spotlight before (ala Weaver). Not saying they're bad but have question marks.

Also noticed this is a small lineup just 9. So the effects of having an top tier player such as Vlad, Pujlos, beltran is more pronounced. With your strengths in the arm you could trade Prior for one. Or do a combo Mulder and Vaz for one and still be sitting pretty with pitching.

I don't know what was going on... nobody took pitchers the first few rounds. I took Prior with the 8th pick in the first round and then Halladay with the 3rd in the second(13 overall). Gagne and Schmidt were the only other pitchers in the first two rounds. Weirdest draft I've ever seen.
