Trading for Dunn/Wainwright in LARGE dynasty

Postby jmlevy » Wed Jun 03, 2009 12:10 am

I am considering a trade offer in a large dynasty league. Earlier today, I just traded my J Morneau, K Johnson, K Slowey and M Pelfrey for C Pena, B Webb, J Outman and J Arrieta. I love landing my #2 in Webb (to form a nice 1-2 punch with ace Johan), plus I like the pitching prospects I obtained, all while essentially giving up a more complete first baseman and replacing him with a more powerful one.

Now the thing is, I am currently in 2nd place in this league, one game back of first. I feel I have a solid team built for the future, but I could really use another power hitter and solid starter.

I have been offered Adam Dunn and Adam Wainwright for my Andre Ethier, John Maine, Jeff Niemann and Jake Fox. (I had originally proposed a deal that involved Nick Weglarz in place of Fox)

I would make this deal in a heartbeat, if not for the concern I have regarding Webb and Duchscherer's injuries and the possibility that this trade will damage my pitching output for this season. Then again, this deal would open up a roster spot to promote Medlen to the majors.

If I were to accept this offer, I think I am most likely done with major trades for the near future. What are your thoughts on this deal? Do you believe Fox is the real deal; can he play good enough defense to find a position in the NL? How about the outlook on my rotation? Is Wainwright the third and final piece to my rotation puzzle that I have been looking for?

Thanks in advance!

I'm not a huge Ethier fan so I would make this deal to free up a spot for Medlen. Beware though, Medlen may not be in the rotation for long unless he continues to pitch as he did last game. I wouldn't hold you breath on Duch coming back before the ASB but I think it's a safe bet that Webb won't have any setbacks in his return from the DL.

Thanks for the help with mine.

I like the idea of landing Dunn/Wainwright - it seems you are getting the best 2 proven players in the deal - Fox could be good but he is still a prospect with limited PT
5x5 H2H, NK 10 teams
C- JP
1B- Voto
2B- Zobri
3B- ARam
SS- Rolins
OF- J. Uptn, Choo, A. Gordn
UTIL- Fielder
BN- C. Crawfrd
SP- Hamls, Bumgarner, Galardo, I. Kenedy, Fister, Kurda, Minr, Dempstr, Burnet, Ogando
RP- Cishek, Veras, Parnel

I think you should do this deal since you are aguably getting the two best players in the trade. Can Dunn fill your RF slot, or do you have to play him at Util with Winn at RF? ANd can you still pick up players after the trade deadline? Some more starters could come out of the woodwork down the road to replace the depth you are giving up.

Thanks for your input Lenny. Dunn will be able to fill my RF slot, as well as the LF and 1B slots. We are allowed to pick up players post-trade deadline; however, we are not allowed to trade once the playoffs begin.

I am debating two offers at this time:

A) My Ethier, Maine, Niemann and Jake Fox for Dunn and Wainwright
B) My Ethier, Niemann and Jake Fox for Dunn and G Floyd

Thoughts?

I'm higher on Ethier than most that have posted I guess. I think you may be giving too much with the prospects that are involved. I really think Ethier is a .300 25 HR guy for a good while. I like the addition of the extra power with Dunn, but giving up Fox would make me pass on this.

Help please

I like Wainwright a whole lot better than Floyd, so I'd still go with A). I'll admit I don't know that much about Fox - does he project to be an elite OF? I like Ethier, but I like Dunn more. And I view Wainwright as a much better keeper option than Maine or Niemann. Maybe you could try lowering your offer by removing one of the other players and work up to this if need be?

Fox can mash.. it's just that he's pretty bad defensively. He probably belongs at 1B, but he could survive at a corner OF spot.

Fox can hit in the minors, but who knows how that will translate in the majors. His hype is huge right now, probably moreso than his talent, so I figured that now would be a good time to sell high. The fact that Fox would probably give up (through errors) more runs than he would contribute is part of the reason I cannot forsee a starters role for so long as he plays in the NL.

I decided to go with trade A. I felt that the upgrade Wainwright presented over Floyd was well worth the loss of Maine.

I do have one more favor to ask; I am seeking analysis on what direction to proceed now that I have made two trades in the last 16 hours. If you don't mind, please take a look here: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=388379

Thanks again for all of your help!

Good move Joe. You robbed that guy. Whats good to always get proven ML talent for prospects.
