is it time to give up on saves?

Postby ratking20 » Tue Jun 02, 2009 9:43 pm

i have 6 saves, the closest team has 15, then 25, then all the rest are about 30 with the top team having 41. my only true closer is valverde on the dl. i have dotel, soriano and madson hoping one of them takes over the closer role. nobod and i mean nobody is willing to trade me a closer and theres nobody on the wire. 11 team roto 6x6. when valverde is off the dl do i give up on saves and trade him for someone with power which i need help in? im good in all other pitching categories

Yes, sounds like it may be time to punt saves. But, just in case, keep a close eye on injuries, you may be able to pick up a closer when somebody gets hurt.

Yeah, if you are doing well in the other cats I would punt saves here. It is going to take a hell of a lot of help for you to come back in that cat. Try and get the best you can for Valverde and go from there.

please help

I always hate giving up any cat so soon. Why won't anyone trade you ONE closer. I mean that's crazy.

I've heard of being gringy, but that's crazy.

it is only 1/3 of the season, but those number are awful. You will be at a disadvantage though, deciding to punt saves now, with four roster slots filled by set-up men/possible future closers. You would have to pull of some schrewd trading skills in other areas (to assure yourself that you dominate hitting and the other pitching categories). OR you will have to be a WW beast and find every hitter pre-hot streak AND become the best spot starter picker guy around, to give you Ws and Ks while holding the ratios down.
IMO, if you can't pull off 2 moves that greatly improve your team soon (doesn't have to include receiving closers at all), then you may be stuck where you are, and that is hoping your guys jump into the closer role for their respected teams.
Good Luck

we have a 1300 inning limit. 6 cats: w, k, saves, era, whip, hits against. we do not have holds. im on pace for just the right innings only starting my aces which include j.santana, halladay, cain, and shields and i also have price, harang, sherzer, and dempster. nobody will trade me a closer at all. and nobody seems to want any of my pitchers except for santana. i can do very well in all cats except for saves without any closers. im last n that cat anyway so theres no difference, i doubt ill ever catch up anyway.

If it's a roto league than Valverde can't save you now. Since your leaguemates value closers so much, wait until Valverde gets going and trade him. If it's a H2H league, than you never give up on anything. Sometimes just one save is enough for a point.
