too early to trade 2010 draft picks?

Postby guyincognito » Mon Jun 01, 2009 3:41 pm

Last place team in our league just announced that everyone on his roster is on the block in return for draft picks next year. The most notable players available are - KRod, Ellsbury, Bruce, Vlad. Only SP of note is Cueto. I'm currently tied for first place over all, but it's a very competitive league. I'm tempted to make a move, just not sure if it's too soon to be dealing next years picks away. League details and roster below.

If you think it's wise to part with the picks to solidify my roster now, what would you offer?

14 team, H2H, Keeper League (keep 2)
B Cats: Avg, E, H, HR, PP, R, RBI, SB
P Cats: W, L, K, QS, ERA, WHIP, HD, S

C - V.Martinez
1B - M.Teixeira
2B - A.Hill
SS - D.Jeter
3B - E.Longoria
OF - Ichiro, T.Hunter, M.Bradley
DH - M.Cuddyer
U - H.Kendrick
Bench - A.Beltre, N.Morgan, Atkins
SP - A.J.Burnett, C.Lee, , E.Santana, J.Weaver
RP - M.Rivera, M.Gonzalez, O.Dotel, R.Soriano, Gregerson
Bench - R.Porcello, D.Willis, C.Wang, Escobar (DL), B.Myers (DL)

Not sure what you're meaning by trading away "2010 picks"? Can you explain so we can help you further?

Sure. In our league you can trade draft picks for next season. Typically, when it gets closer to the trade deadline, teams who believe they are out of it start selling their top players whom they are not keeping (since we only keep 2) for draft picks next year so that they end up with a better chance for next season. Teams that are still in it will make the deals to acquire what they think they need to put them over the top, or give them the edge in the playoffs. This is a big $$$ league, so that is why people would even think about doing this sort of thing. You potentially are sacrificing next season to win this season, but the payoff is well over a $1000, so it's worth it if you can win it all. My predicament is that I'm currently in first place, but I don't know where I'll be closer to the deadline, so I could be giving away draft picks unnecessarily, or I could be giving up draft picks now, that I could potentially be giving away later for better options. No one has really looked to do this so early in the season, but I also don't want to miss my chance to cash in.

Thanks for your help with mine.... Im not sure you do this..... You can only keep 2 players... you need your picks next year.... and none of those guys I think will make a significant difference on your team that will help you win... then again I dont know where you fair thus far in each category. I say stay pat... keep your picks as you only keep 2 players....

Hey there, i'm no so well versed about this "trading for picks" thing lol but I will say that it looks like you could use a closer and K-Rod is rock solid. I would target him, good luck!

Help with mine?

Yea I'm not familiar with all this stuff because I've never been in a keeper league. But I like Bruce, Krod and Ellsbury of those players. I'd say Krod to help with saves, but his injury has me a little concerned. Bruce is a solid bat that keeps improving.

Hope that helps a bit. Thanks for the help with mine!
