Is Wieters my guy? WHIR

Postby coma » Mon Jun 01, 2009 3:19 am

So injuries have plagued my team recently. Right now, I have Wieters are Util. Are any of the players available in my league a better option than him? (I realize how much this forum loves him, but it will take some time for him to adjust. The main reason I originally grabbed him was for trade bait)

Available batters: Hart, Soto, Ordonez, Uggla, Drew, Hawpe, Atkins, Choo, Werth, Cuddyer, Lind, Lowell
(Available pitchers: Slowey, Valverde, Nolasco, Capps)

8 team H2H league (non-keeper).
Hitter cats are R/H/HR/RBI/SB/AVG/OBP.
Pitcher cats are IP/W/SV/HR/K/ERA/WHIP.

Ok, looking at your team, I've got a couple moves for you. Firstoff, I'd definitely keep Wieters, be it in your Util. slot or as your starting catcher, I really love the kid going forward. He gives you great ammo to trade either him or McCann (for the right price of course!). I'm not a fan of Pierre, and think that when Manny comes back he looses all value, so I would drop him for Hawpe. He helps pretty much across the board (except SB's) and is just a decent fantasy OF'er who hits in one of the best parks in baseball. I'd also love to see you try and get Hart on your team, he's in a funk now, but he's a solid OF none-the-less. I just don't know how to have you do it. If you had 1 extra DL spot, I'd have you DL Votto and grab Hart. If you don't, why not try parlaying one of your catchers with a pitcher (maybe Oswalt, not a fan of him myself) for an upgrade at SP? Granted you're pretty stacked there now, but if you can upgrade Oswalt, you're staff would be SOLID!!

thoughts on mine??

Sorry I wasn't able to help with the one you asked for, catching up on some "WHIRing" right now.
Given how shallow your league is, Wieters just isn't worth owning. I can't imagine a lot of catchers being owned, and when you factor in Martin, Molina, Martinez, Mauer, and Inge floating around, that leaves two teams who would even be willing to entertain the idea of dealing for him, and likely pass given the risk and your probable asking price.

With your roster I'm doing a couple of things:
Dropping Pierre immediately. I realize he's playing out of his mind right now, but the guys that are available on your wire are far more valuable long term.
I'd drop Pierre for Hawpe and not think twice.
I'd then drop Wieters for Shin-Soo Choo and if you don't like him, get in on Lind.

Your league seems very shallow. You have McCann so Ordonez, Uggla and Werth are all more valuable then Wieters.

Thanks for answering mine!!!

First off.....I have to say WOW!!! I guess it's because I am not used to 8 Team leagues or something but Hawpe, Magglio, Uggla, Werth all on the WW (as well as some others but WOW)!!!! ....also.....nice team!!!

I don't own Wieters in any of my leagues because I was a little slow on getting him but I would like to grab him and hope he works the magic. The key word though here being "Hope"! Wieters is still unproven and it will take quite a few more games to see if he is the real deal so I would pass unless he starts to pick things up in a hurry then you can try and grab him. You already have Mccann so Wieters is not needed but if you have your heart set on him or he busts a move then you can always drop/trade Mccann (but I wouldn't recommend it).

I would say though that you need to find a way to grab Werth/Hawpe/Uggla....and maybe Magglio (but he has been horrible so only if he turns it around)....but definately get Werth ASAP and then Hawpe/Uggla if you get room.

So......I think Wieters has the tools but it all depends if he uses them this year or not but for now stick with the proven guys over the slumping or unproven guys.

Good Luck!
