Draft from hell - anyone do worse than this?

Postby ssiknosaj909 » Sat May 30, 2009 5:40 pm

Talk about the draft from hell...I only do one baseball team a year and this one is terrible...currently in 10th of 12 with 53.5 points. No clue what I do from here on out...fire sale? or be patient?

I had the 9th pick.
Round 1 - Grady Sizemore, OF (I thought he fell to me! not even a top 300 player right now.)
Round 2 - Mark Teixeria, 1B (starting to pick it up, not too bad of a pick I guess.)
Round 3 - Dustin Pedroia, 2B (decent pick I guess.)
Round 4 - Jason Bay, OF (One of my few good picks.)
Round 5 - David Ortiz, Util (About to end up on waviers! I was deceding between him and Voto - made the wrong choice!)
Round 6 - Brian McCann, C (coming around but his injury hurt my team pretty bad, not to mention going in I was going to take a pitcher in the 6th and Mauer or V-Mart 7th.)
Round 7 - Francisco Rodriguez, CL (traded straight up for Holliday right before the season. I am 2nd to last in saves. Whoops.)

It's about to get real bad...
Round 8 - Rickey Nolasco (enough said! worst pick of the draft by far.)
Round 9 - Jon Lester (ended up dealing him in a "buy low" for the other guy - couldn't stand him anymore. The trade = E.Volquez/Fuentes/Tulo/Ellsbury for Lester/Holliday/Hawpe/J.Hardy)
Round 10 - Roy Oswalt (traded him straight up for Huston Street, another owners 18th round pick.)
Round 11 - J.J. Hardy (terrible, I replaced him with Tulo, who isnt any better. Almost took Ryan Zimmerman here!)
Round 12 - Brad Hawpe (he was doing great but had to deal him to move Lester.)
Round 13 - John Danks (ERA moving towards 5...he hasn't performed where he was picked. Not to mention I almost took Verlander or Harrang here...but figured I would get a can't miss like Danks and take a flier on them next round. They didn't last...
Round 14 - Adrian Beltre (on my bench, about to be on waviers. Good thing I went Beltre/Hardy instead of Zimmerman/Verlander!)

Round 15 - Josh Johnson (one of the few good picks, he is currently carrying my pitching staff.)
Round 16 - David Price (ended up dropping him when the news broke he was starting the season in Triple A.)
Round 17 - Justin Upton (thank God I didn't drop him after his slow start, he is my best hitter)
Round 18 - Brandon Lyon (dropped once Rodney was named closer. I then had a hard decison to make do I pick up his teamatte Porcello or go with Anthony Reyes who had a 1.83 ERA in Cleveland last year? Went with Reyes :-S
Round 19 - Troy Percival (recently dropped, the few saves he gave me were not worth the damage to my ERA and WHIP)
Round 20 - Ted Lilly (one of the few good picks I made.)
Round 21 - Rickie Weeks (was a good pick until his season ending injury. Now I am picking up crappy middle infielders just about every week hoping one of them will get hot. So far no luck.)

Round 22 - Chris Ray (about that....)
Round 23 - Brandon Morrow (did I mention I am last in saves?)
Round 24 - Jack Cust (ended up on waviers for LaPorta....now I've got Cody Ross in my starting OF.)
Round 25 - Manuel Corpas (def. on waviers...thought he would end up with 30+ saves :-X
Round 26 - Ken Griffey Jr. (Ian Stewart, Todd Helton, Jair Jurrjens tempted me but...Griffey has to have a good year in an M's uni right????)
Round 27 - Dallas McPherson (Gary Sheffield and Andreuw Jones were on my mind, but I just picked up Griffey. I needed to fill CI and Garko and Helton were still on undrafted, but McPherson hit 40 bombs in AAA...dropped before the season.)
Round 28 - Carl Pavano (dropped him after 9 ER in 1 inning in Texas.)

So......anyone else have a draft this bad?

In one of my leagues, 11 of my 23 picks have had a stint on the DL this year. Almost 50%! This includes (Hamilton, BJ Upton, Ichiro, Guerrero, Harden, Carpenter, Kazmir, Hoffman, etc...)

It still is a decent team, you are one or two moves away from being top 5. It is only May 31, there is still much more baseball to be played.

It is too early to be worried about some of these guys and some were just risky/bad picks. Like Hardy was way too early to give up on, he has been hitting extremely well all of May.

I've seen drafts much worse than yours. If anything, you've just had your share of bad luck. Any draft looks bad in hindsight after all.

Shouldn't have dropped Price....your team will be fine once they get healthy. This isn't all that bad of a team....
