Your thoughts on Brian Matusz?

Hey all,

I am trying to decide whether to keep Matusz on my minor league roster (we get just 2 players). What are your thoughts on him?

Will he be called up anytime soon? I know there are 2 prospects ahead of him but he is pitching wonderful.

Also, does the fact he is doing this in single A ball not impress you too much?

Anyways, he won't be called up any time in the near future and there will be plenty of prospects who will make it up to the majors before he will, but he will eventually be better than most of those.

It doesn't matter too much to me that he is in A right now, he'll be in Bowie some time this summer I'm sure.

Who would you pick up in place of Matusz?

I would have a roster spot open for a spot starter probably. I have been wanting to make room for one this last week or two.

Is there a chance he gets a chance with the club this season?

Highly unlikely he will be up this year. A potential #1-2 is better than a spot starter, I would just hold onto him. It depends on your league though. What percentage of the top 25 prospects are on a team right now? Top 50? If the % is low, you could potentially get away with dropping Matusz, but Minor leaguers you have to be patient with.

It really depends on who else would be available. Matusz is a great prospect. Matusz was the first pitcher drafted but he went only 4th overall. Usually there are 2 to 3 pitchers taken in the top 5. When the first pitcher goes at 4 and then next at 9 it screams to me, "weak pitching class". I especially think this when an RP (Josh Fields, SEA) was taken 20th!

I'd much rather roll the dice with guys who were drafted later in the 2008 draft class. Ethan Martin LAD, Christian Friedrich COL, and Jake Odorizzi MIL. All 3 of these guys show more upside in not only there arms/stuff but they are all also NL pitchers. Ethan and Jake may take a bit longer to reach the bigs but Christian Friedrich will be in the bigs right after Matusz. Besides pitching in Camden Yards can be a disaster, especially when the Yankees are in town to exploit that little league sized right field porch.
