A Catcher is not an Infielder?

Postby SlightlyStoopid » Wed May 27, 2009 1:38 pm

With the announced call up of Weiters(who's been riding a bench spot) I was pondering my roster spots and how to effectively use them. Playing in a Yahoo league, I noticed that you can not slot a catcher into the IF spot. Barajas is going to be much more effective for me then Getz (it's a deep league).

If a catcher is not considered an infielder what is he? Is it like this at other sites or just Yahoo?

The Battery - Pitcher(1)+Catcher(2)
The Infield - 1B(3), 2B(4), 3B(5), SS(6)
The Outfield - LF(7), CF(8), RF(9)

I realize the pitcher and catcher are part of the battery, but during an infield fly they are considered infielders so I guess it just surprised me that a catcher can not be slotted into the IF spot. Another one of baseball's weird rules I guess and just adds to why I love the game.

Same in ESPN, can't put a catcher at an infield slot.

Hurt me big time as I wanted to have both Bengie and Mauer in at the same time. Couldn't do that, so I traded one of them when Mauer came off the DL. Could you guess which one I traded?

If an OF catches the ball on an infield it still invokes the infield fly rule as well, the position doesn't have anything to do with it.

I am guessing Mauer, lol. In my ESPN Auction keeper leagues I bought 4 catchers and drafted one in the minor league portion, we start 2 catchers. I got Mauer for $14, Kurt Suzuki for $2 Dioner Navarro for $5 and Matt Weiters for $12 and drafted JP Arencibia in the minors. I tried to trade Mauer at the beginning of the season with no takers and ended up trading Matt Weiters for Adam Jones and Matt Cain (this was a week before opening day) and ended up releasing Navarro when Mauer came off the DL, but was still hot in not being able to trade Mauer, but now I am glad I didnt, and he will be kept next year at $19
