Joba was routinely throwing his 4-seam between 88 and 90 tonight... Does anybody have any information on why this is? Maybe his leg injury was more serious than intially thought? Has it been like this most of the season?
First, let me start off by saying that Joba is tough to read. He has struggled in the first inning of every game he's pitched this season, with the exception of one game.
Next, he's throw his fastball at 90-92 mph in the first inning of most games this season. A lot of people say this is why he has been so hittable in the first inning, as he has always upped the velocity after the first inning. It's almost been like he wasn't fully warmed up before he came in the game.
In conclusion, I'd like to say that he hasn't thrown an 88-90 mph 4 seam fastball all year. I felt like I was watching joba throw the ball out of a wheel chair tonight. It was painful, and I think he was in pain. It's going to be interesting to see just how bad his knee affected him tonight. 80ish pitches in 4 innings pitched is just plain ugly.
The 3-hour rain delay couldn't have helped his routine. Maybe he stiffened up? I dunno.
Joba is frustrating to own. He has the potential to be the best pitcher in baseball, but there's always some injury or something else holding him back.
The type of player/pitcher I have always distanced myself from (+ Harden) will now be the one(s) to KILL me! Since I own Joba, don't worry, he's hurt. And yes, I knew the risk I took with these guys, the exact ones I normally leave for everyone else.
Not to highjack completely with my rant, but is he pacing himself too much by leaving some off of his fastball?
