Liriano droppable?

Postby OnceinDC2\1 » Wed May 20, 2009 9:52 pm

This guy was ranked ahead of billingsley in just about every ranking I saw.

His peripherals and numbers in the second half last year were quite good.

What is the story here? I just put a glass through a wall watching this 7ER meltdown.

Nope. Not droppable. The kid is a slow starter. Put him on your bench

I dont know why he was ranked higher then Chad to me Chad us a much better pitcher. I would hold on to him for now he has shown some light so keep him just dont start him that much.

I think it mostly had to do w/ the broken leg that Billingsley suffered in the off season.

I know that he's been dropped in a couple of my leagues, and I'm debating on whether to pick him up or not. You guys think I should pick him up and stash him on my bench until he starts pitching better?? I'm considering it but let me know what you guys think. :-?

i personally don't own him. but I would still hang onto him/stash him for a little longer if you have the chance. I still want to see what he can do, but I'm very skeptical to be honest. I think some guys just aren't the same after tommy john, and this might be the case here. He may never been the pitcher we saw a few years ago again.

Imo, you can't drop Liriano unless you're picking up a true #1 fantasy SP, and most likely that guy is not available. This is the type of guy you hold onto. If you look closely, his walks have been a major problem which to me is correctable. Let him ride it out on your bench against tougher opponents for now, while spot starting him against weaker lineups until he has that breakthrough 7 inning, 10 K game.

He's also a buy low candidate at this time. Trade one of those flash in the pan "stud" SPs to an unwitting Liriano owner and watch him dive at the chance.

I had Liriano during his 06 campaign, when he came out of nowhere and tore it up.

I also heard at the time that he threw a very "violent" slider, and that he was destined for some kind of injury.

Looking at fangraphs, his velocity is down on all his pitches, and hes throwing the slider less than he used to. His fastball now averages 91.5 (06 - 94.7mph), he's throwing the slider less and slower (06 - 87.7, 09 - 85.5 mph)

Maybe he's not throwing as hard as he's used to, but the fact that he's not locating (BB/9 is in the 4s, used to be in the 2s back in 06), and giving up more HRs (HR/9 has seen a dramatic increasE) is not too comforting.

Today against boston will either:
1. spell the end for liriano and he'll go to the minors.
2. spell the end for liriano and he'll go on the DL with some made up injury.
3. He'll pitch like an ace and give a glimmer of hope.

stay tuned.

[sarcasm]
No one's droppable haven't you been reading the Cafe? You'll be taunted with "OMG, some noob dropped Liriano" in one of the dumb drop posts.
[/sarcasm]

I'm still holding him in my keeper, but I wouldn't pick him up if he was dropped in my other leagues, until he shows some signs of life. One reason is that Manny is using up my bench room,. I think the dividing line is how deep is your league and how much bench room do you have? There should always be room for one prospect\sleeper\potential breakout on most benches. Mine's already filled with some druggy. :-{

Of course what do I know I dropped Nolasco. !+)
