My team's out to an awful start at 21-38-6 and 9th out of 10th place. Here's what it looks like now:
C - Suzuki 1B - Howard 2B - Sanchez 3B - ARod SS - Hardy OF - Hamilton, Quentin, Ethier Util - C. Davis B - Abreu, J. Upton, Victorino, Aviles
SP - Beckett, Shields, Vasquez, Nolasco, Scherzer RP - Soria, Morrow, Downs
I took a quick look at the overall league stats last night and I'm in last or 2nd to last in nearly every offensive and pitching category. Not good. I'm really not very concerned with my offense, however. Hardy, Hamilton, Quentin, Davis, and to a lesser extent Howard have all gotten off to slow starts and I've obviously only had about a week of ARod. I think my offense is going to work itself out.
I'm a bit concerned about my pitching, however. Not so much my RP....Morrow's awfulness the last 2 nights aside, my only problem with them has been the DL trips. My SPs outside of Vasquez have been a huge disappointment. Beckett's got a high BABIP so he should turn it around some. Same goes for Nolasco, though I'm not as confident in his ability to rebound. Shields hasn't been awful but is sporting a low BABIP so I'm thinking he may be a candidate to ship out. Scherzer's not pitching badly but isn't getting any run support.
So I've already got a deal drawn up in principle with one guy...I give Abreu and get Lester. He's in the same situation as Beckett, except that his peripherals are pretty much outstanding all the way around which indicates to me its only a matter of time until he starts dominating again (whereas Beckett's having some control issues this year). I'm giving up some of my only speed in Abreu, but he's not getting much PT with my outfield anyway.
Another guy I'm targeting is Verlander. Another high BABIP, good peripherals guy. Would Shields for Verlander straight up be a fair swap? The guy who has Verlander is in desperate need of a reliever, as he's only got Ziegler right now (he's got Joba in his other RP spot). Should I throw in Soria or Downs? Who should I add to the deal from his end (some of the interesting names....Carpenter, Bedard, Liriano, Carlos Lee, Ellsbury, Dunn, Holiday)
One thing to help you team out is DROP BRANDON (RP) he blew a save on thursday and he is giving up at least 2 hits per game he trys to get the save. I think he is gonna blow alot of saves for you. Well just thats just my point of view cause i live in seattle and watch their games all the time. Try picking up a good starting pitcher. One name is Zach Duke for espn only 53% owners has him. he averages 7 innings per game. and his era is around 2-3. He is been doing great for me. he should work for you
Going to have to disagree with you on Morrow. His hits aren't the problem this year (only 9 in 8.1 innings), it's the walks. He's always been known to have some shaky control, but even so I don't think he's going to continue to average over 11BB/9. He said himself after yesterday's BS that he's throwing his fastball way too much and knows he needs to mix up his pitches better, so I'm willing to let him work that out before dropping him. His potential's just too high...despite his struggles this year, he's still sporting a K/9 ratio of over 10, inline with his career numbers.
Duke is a nice recommendation, but someone in my league already has him.
Also...a buddy of mine in the league who's a huge Yankee homer (took Tex 6th overall, Matsui in the 11th, etc.) has some interesting guys as well.
Tex is one...once his ridiculous .193 BABIP normalizes and assuming his LD% gets back to his career norms, he should be a great buy low candidate. The other guy I'd certainly try and get from him is Halladay. He's also got a few other guys with very low BABIP that I could probably get thrown in...Adkins and Ludwick specifically.
Would something like ARod/Shields for Tex/Halladay/either Adkins or Ludwick get it done? Would I be giving up too much? Or not enough?
i disagree with the guy who says to drop morrow. he's just gotten back from the DL. one blown save is no big deal... it happens to everyone. i like you going after verlander. i have to say, i offered shields for verlander in my league straight up, and it was rejected.
i think you could offer shields and downs and ask for verlander and bedard. i agree that you could deal abreu for a top pitcher. i'm not sure i'd go after lester. what about billingsley?
i just read that morrow is no longer the closer. i still wouldn't drop him though. however, i'd try to use him in a trade instead of downs. not sure the guy who needs relievers will bite, but it's worth a shot.
