With the 32nd pick of the 2009 Draft
The Colorado Rockies select: Brett Jackson
6'2", 210 lbs, Bats: L. 20 y.o. University of California.

With a college arm already taken at the 11 slot, the Rockies will follow their course of sticking to college bats. They need outfielders, and Brett Jackson is the best one on the board at this time. He's a big fella with average power, average speed, and a plus arm. He strikes out a little too often, but he has the power and skills to develop into a number 3 type hitter. I think they would consider Kentrail Davis here, but his bonus demands will not allow him to hit in the thin air.
In my fridge: Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS), Central Waters Peruvian Morning, Bell's Batch 10,000, Dale's Pale Ale, Capital Brewery Amber, New Glarus Moon Man, and Guinness.

With the 33rd pick of the 2009 Draft
The Seattle Mariners select: Steven Baron C, FL HS

Rationale: Defensively he is already a great catcher who calls his own games at the high school level and shouldn't need much work. He has plus speed for a catcher and can steal a few bases. With his current swing he has average power but most of that is bat speed, he will need work on his timing so a reworked swing could be in his future.

with the 34th pick in the draft the Rockies select
Rich Poythress, 1B Georgia

Rationale- Poythress to me just seems like an all around good hitter- some think his power might not play in the big leagues but i think that he will be a solid producer. Light in the power department can always be boosted by playing half of your games in Coors Field. By selecting Poythress this fills a need in the Rockies system with Atkins and Helton being pushed aside. He seems to have a decent eye at the plate and i think will be one of the better bats from this draft

Nice job on this so far guys. Could I put this mock and your analysis into the Future Rookies column this week (with each pick cited for credit, of course)? Draft is right around the corner!

with the 35th pick in the draft the Diamondbacks select
Chad James, LHP, Oklahoma HS

Rationale- I really can't believe James lasted this long as the only reason for the slide are signability issues. James is a strong HS lefty with 2 already excellent pitches in his fastball and curveball. He's a big kid that can add some velocity and crispness to his mechanics in the minors. I look for the D'Backs to maximize this draft and choose the best player here and James fits the bill. His scholarship to Oklahoma State is the only thing standing in Arizona's way and that shouldn't be that much of an issue here as he's easily the the top prep pitcher still on the board.
