Joba Could Miss Next Start

Postby Old_Style » Sun May 10, 2009 12:20 am

Just a heads up.

From Rotoworld...
Joba Chamberlain broke a blood vessel in his throwing hand Saturday during batting practice and may not be able to start on Sunday.
Chamberlain was tossing a ball back to the infield when he felt a pop. "He threw a ball in and he looked down at his thumb and he felt something and looked at it. He popped a blood vessel and he got some treatment during the game," manager Joe Girardi said late Saturday night. "We don't think it will be an issue but we have to protect ourselves." Alfredo Aceves will get the nod if Joba can't go. May. 9 - 11:30 pm et

The New York Post is reporting that Joba will indeed start today, unless during warm ups his thumb gets significantly worse. As late last night, joba had grip with no pain on the ball.

As you said though, Aceves will go if Joba can't.

Edit: Taken from mlb.com at 10AM:
Joba Chamberlain's thumb ailment was no more than a scare, so he'll start as planned for the Yanks in today's 1:35 p.m. ET finale vs. the O's

Yeah, this makes two outings in a row that he has struggled greatly in the first inning. Last time he gave up a rbi single and a 3 run homer, and this time was no different with another three run homer coming in the first. However, it is a good sign that such a young pitcher is able to shake off such a horrid start to the game and pitch 5 innings of solid ball (which he's done twice now). In fact, the only difference between this start and his last start was that thumb of his, which made it harder to toss that curve and/or find that extra heat on his fastball.

Stay with him guys, he's almost there.

Joba will be good

Before todays starts Joba has a 13.50 ERA in the 1st Inning and a 1.87 ERA from the second inning on. Today as well proved those numbers. Another interesting tid bit, his 4 seamer sits 89-90 in the first innings and then from the second innings on its 94~96.

Look for him to correct his 1st inning troubles and then skys the limit for this kid. ;-D
