Most pointless trade I can recall in recent times.

Quite the contrary...not that Freel is a world-beater, but the Cubs are missing an IF util player since they let DeRosa go. Gathright doesn't fit into the Cubs plans, but Freel is the ultra sub (speed off the bench, can play 2B, 3B, and OF), so I think the move makes sense, at least from the Cubs bench stand point.

Gathright makes alot less then Freel. And the O's didn't have room for him since they like Reimold down in AAA for the LF spot. Also the O's needed a guy who can pinch run and has a good chance to steal a base.

what a pointless thread to call this trade pointless, especially with the news of Aram hurting his shoulder and possibly heading to the DL this is gold that they didn't think they would need to strike until tonight... what im saying is Freel like previously stated can play pretty much all of the INF spots aside from 1B and also play OF, this will thus give the cubs the ability to used him to spell some of the starters trying to hold their end of the Aramis injury.. and you may say but they have Miles who is also a utility guy (but have you checked his stats lately batting around .215) but freel adds the extras of the OF positions also... i really like this trade having 2 veteran Utility guys who cover all starting spots aside from 1B and C to use at their disposal is always a great benefit... nice trade finally...

Is it hard to make yourself sound smart after Ramirez got hurt or are you the one that knew he would get hurt tonight?

He was just saying the ARam injury even helps it more. Meaning he thinks the trade wasn't pointless to begin with. You may want to read his entire post.

amen... [mod edit]

but anyways just to clarify for you althought mac-unit did a pretty good job... what i was saying is the trade is that much more valuable SINCE Aram went down tonight, not saying that if he didn't go down tonight that it still wouldn't have had tremendous value especially with a younger bench, adding Freel with the Vet Miles also helps the young players Fukudome, Hoffpaiur, Fontenot, Theriot and Soto... you don't always have to get a guy that hits 40 HR or Ks 200 guys a year for it to be a good trade, veteran leadership goes a long way also...[mod edit]
