John Smoltz: When's he coming back? What will his role be?

He's had so much success as both a starter and reliever I was wondering what the Sox had in mind for him when he gets off the DL.

Penny has been pitching pretty poorly. Smoltz will get a spot in the rotation if he's healthy enough. IMO, it's Penny who would be out of the rotation with Wakefield serving as the number 5. However, Wakefield has been walking too many guys this year and may end up the odd man out.

Red Sox's Smoltz sharp in first rehab outing

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — John Smoltz took a big step in his return form shoulder surgery, throwing three scoreless innings in his first rehabilitation outing.

Pitching for the Boston Red Sox's Class A affiliate in Greenville, Smoltz struck out two and threw 29 pitches in his first game action in almost a year.

The 42-year-old Smoltz opened the season on the disabled list following surgery last June to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

Smoltz, who has 210 career victories, agreed to a $5.5 million, one-year deal with the Red Sox in January after 20 seasons with the Atlanta Braves.

He made his first rehab appearance about 2 1/2 hours from Atlanta and hopes to be ready for his return to the major leagues next month.

was on the WW in my money leage and we have 2 DL spots....stashing him away and anything from here is a plus
