Russell Martin Morneau Deal WHIR

Postby skones » Fri May 08, 2009 6:11 am

12 teams, 6 Keepers. 2nd season. Standard Hitting Categories plus OPS. Standard Pitching Categories + Holds.

So here's my team:
C: Russell Martin
1B: Aubrey Huff
2B: Howie Kendrick
3B: David Wright
SS: Michael Young
OF: Carlos Beltran
OF: BJ Upton
OF: Justin Upton
UTIL: Mike Cameron
UTIL: Jeff Francoeur
Bench: Adam Laroche, Jose Guillen, Daniel Murphy,
DL: Stephen Drew

P: Joel Zumaya
P: Juan Cruz
P: Bobby Seay
P: Jim Johnson
RP: Brad Ziegler
RP: Mike Gonzalez
RP: Scott Downs
SP: Tim Lincecum
SP: Derek Lowe
SP: Ted Lilly
Bench: Edwin Jackson
Bench: Chris Young
DL: Brandon Webb

Proposed Deal:
I give Russell Martin and Adam Laroche
He gives Yadier Molina and Justin Morneau

I feel like my team has an adequate amount of speed on the basepaths, if I need more, guys like Juan Pierre, Michael Bourne, and Josh Anderson are available. I feel like my team is relatively lacking in run producing which is where Morneau comes in. He gives me a boost in power, and absolute consistency which I believe is extremely important in a league such as this. Molina is a guy who I can plug in at catcher and won't hurt me. He'll give me a solid batting average all year long and I think he'll be around 60 runs and 60 rbis on the season hitting in the Cardinals lineup. I understand I give up one of the best catchers in fantasy, but the fact of the matter is, I really don't think Martin will be running much this year. I think he swipes between 12 and 15 bases which by all accounts isn't anything to write home about. With Manny out of the lineup, his RBI potential takes a hit as well as his runs scored. Adam Laroche is just an extremely streaky play for me and I don't like plugging him in at all.

Simply put, I didn't like the idea of keeping Martin coming into this season and I certainly won't like it going into next season. I still think he hits in the .270 range with around 70 runs and 70 rbis with those 15 SB but I'm not sure that's 'keeper worthy.' That's one motivation for making this type of deal. I've also considered proposing a deal involving Brandon Phillips and Martin where I would turn to the waiver wire and nab Kurt Suzuki. Howie Kendrick doesn't look like this is his year. Thoughts, ideas, other possible targets to deal Martin for?

Here's his team as well, if you think it would be wise to ask for someone other than Molina and nab Suzuki off Waivers to fill that Catcher Slot:

C: Yadier Molina
1B: Justin Morneau
2B: Jose Lopez
3B: Evan Longoria
SS: Jason Bartlett
OF: Ryan Braun
OF: Ichiro Suzuki
OF: Chris Duncan
UTIL: Adam Jones
UTIL: Jorge Cantu
Bench: Troy Tulowitzki, Jordan Schaefer, Jason Veritek
DL: Ryan Doumit, Melvin Mora

P: Jon Lester
P: Max Scherzer
P: Armando Galarraga
P: Chris Volstad
SP: Roy Hallady
SP: Jarrod Washburn
SP: Dallas Braden
RP: Brad Lidge
RP: Matt Lindstrom
RP: JJ Putz
Bench: Anibal Sanchez, Brian Bannister
DL: Jose Valverde

I'm also in the process of getting whatever I can for Ziegler and Gonzalez effectively punting saves and just going straight for holds and locking down that category every week. I am also thinking the inclusion of a sell-high like Edwin Jackson might make things a bit more interesting.

I would make this deal, Mourneau is the best player involved and he is an absolute beast! The next best player in the trade is Martin who is a catcher and puts up quality numbers.....for a catcher lol. You already have enough speed so his 15-20 stolen bases are null. Go for it and don't look back!

Help with mine?
