With Mark DeRosa now playing for the Indians, Mike Fontenot has been playing rather well in his place for the Cubs this season. Currently, he is batting .256-5-15 and has eligibility at both 2B and 3B. Some websites considered him a sleeper before the season and others are curious about how he'll produce in a full-time role. What do you guys think?

Around 15 hr, 20 if he gets a little lucky. He'll probably hit .275-.280. I kept him at a relative bargain in a very deep keeper league, but he's not a guy you should mess with in a shallow mixed. Definitely has his uses tho. And he's a fine real-life player for the Cubs as he's putting up good numbers for a decent defensive 2b.

It's Mike Fontenot, and yes he is for real. Amazing how such a small guy can pack so much punch.

If by real deal you mean 15 to maybe 20 HR, an AVG that wont' help you but won't kill you, very few SB and mediocre R/RBI then yeah he is for real.
Viable starter but not much to get excited about either.

I think you can expect similar numbers to DeRosa's last season numbers. He has some legit pop in his bat and hitting behind the heart of that order he should have some rbi opportunities. I would be worried about how he reacts after the all star break though because he has always been a part time player prior to this year.

I'm using him in my deep mixed league, but like greenandgold said, his splits are huge. Lou sits him a lot vs. Lefties, so bear that in mind. But if you're looking for a stopgap guy or bench depth, you could do worse.
Keep wreves in General Talk in 2011!

Fontenot is one of the guys ive considered trading for for 2B for now (to cover for KJohnson) but some of his numbers scare me. on the season he has .262 BABIP but only 10.4 LD%.
10.4
..he has 44.8 FB% and 16.7 HR/FB%.
10.4 LD% is awfully low. isnt he easily to fall into a slump?

Lou hasn't been sitting him against lefties. That was the idea going into the season but he has said he is going to give him a chance out there. Aramis coming back into the line up might change that because his splits are brutal but for the most part he's left him in there.
