Laporta or Strasburg/or??? (for the future)

Postby gws226 » Tue May 05, 2009 9:55 pm

Hey guys,

If you had the choice of claiming LaPorta tonight for your roster or waiting/crossing fingers that Strasburg or (someone not named Wieters or Hanson) gets a callup end of the summer....

Would you take laporta or wait it out?

If it helps, LaPorta (unless he's going to belt 30HRs will not crack the starting lineup on my roster)
If you found my advice helpful, please help me

If Laporta has to hit 30 bombs then there is no point. Braun barely did that and he was a much better hitter for average at the time. no way he hits anymore than 30 and that's the ceiling... this year. Never know with waiver 1, maybe some idiot drops a stud in mid-june, I always take the chance on a failing stud when it gets later than a prospect. Only way I grab prospects is if they come up april or may.

Id pass this year. Next year might be another story. It will take some time for him to get acclimated to Pro ball and will not touch 30+ this year for sure.

Thanks for the help...

LaPorta is a free agent in my league. I picked him up after his HR and dropped him today. He's platooning as of now and will take a while to adjust. Keep an eye on him, but (Matt) wait(ers) it out.

I have LaPorta in my keeper league, but he is in the minors and I can keep him there all season, but if he gets 150 at bats this season, next season I have to drop or roster him. Strassberg would depend on who drafts him, if the Nats do like what is projected keep in mind they suck for one, 2 he might hold out on a contract for them and 3 they might rush him too fast and cause him to be another Todd Van Poppel, with not letting him get enough development time, I know most keeper leagues have a 3 year limit so that would not be enough for Strassy but La Porta could be a major factor next season for sure.

Thanks for your input on mine...

Is it a Yahoo league? If it's a Yahoo league I think I'd just grab LaPorta, because if Strasburg isn't called up this year he won't be put into their database probably...

If it's a league that adds MiLB players (ala ESPN), I'd have to think long and hard about it... Honestly, I think Strasburg has the higher ceiling, but the problem is that we all know about flame out pitching prospects. Great hitting prospects tend to have a better track record. That being said, Strasburg looks to be about as much of a sure thing as you can find. So if he'll be in the database, I'd hold out for him. He'll be gold in a keeper league, not to mention as soon as he's on your team and the hype-machine kicks up even more, who knows what kind of trade offers you'll get for him.
