Trade Help... Always WHIR

Postby candyman » Tue May 05, 2009 10:35 am

Here's the deal, I got offered a trade that I'm not a big fanof, but I thought I'd get some opinions on it, and see if anybody had counter offer ideas. Or maybe, I'm just looking at this deal wrong.

Any ways, here it is, I don't really give up much.

I give up:
Lowell
T. Hanson

I get:
Maggs
C. Guillen
Carmona

I know it looks decent at first. But frst, people really overvalue young prospects in this league (you keep 5 players each season at the spot they were drafted, an Hanson was a FA). Second, I see Guillen as a drop off from a health Lowell. Third, I'm not a big fan of Fausto (somebody convince me otherwise). And finally, look at my roster below and tell me how Maggs fits in...

Here's my team:

Weekly, 10 team, H2H Points league; 5 keepers
Very screwy scoring: Singles: 1, Doubles: 2, Triples: 3, HR:4, RBI:1, Runs:1, SB: 3, BB:1, GIDP: -1,
IP: 3 W: 10, K:1, Save: 5, H: -1, L: -5, ER: -2, Blown Saves: -3

2 starters at each position, 4 OF, 1 util , 9 Pitchers...
6 Bench Players
1 DL
C: VMart (10)
C: Y. Molina(29)
1B: AGonz (3)
1B: C. Delgado (12)
2B: A. Hill (FA)
2B: A. Ramirez (FA keeper)
SS: HanRam (1 keeper)
SS: Theriot (13)
3B: C. Jones (5)
3B: M. Lowell (21)
OF: Soriano (2)
OF: McLouth (FA keeper)
OF: V. Wells(11)
OF: B. Abreu (7)
DH: E. Dukes (25)
-----------------
Bench: J. Thome (13)
Bench: M. Teahan (FA)
Bench: K. Matsui (19)
------------------
P: C. C. Sabathia (4 keeper)
P: King Felix (6)
P. C. Billingsley (14 keeper)
P: M. Cain (12)
P: J. Soria (12)
P: C. Kershaw (18)
P: D. Lowe (16)
P: D. Braden (FA)
P: G. Floyd (29 keeper, acquired through trade)
----------------------
Bench: Morrow (22)
Bench: T. Hanson (FA)
Bench: T. Cahill (FA)
DL: T. Hudson (FA)
DL: H. Kuroda (20)
DL: J. Smoltz (24)

Here's his team:

C Russell Martin
C Jason Varitek
1B Prince Fielder
1B Justin Morneau
2B Chase Utley
2B Placido Polanco
3B Adrian Beltre
3B Russell Branyan
SS Michael Young
SS J.J. Hardy
OF Magglio Ordonez
OF Torii Hunter
OF Jermaine Dye
OF Nick Swisher
UTIL Adam Lind
Bench Carlos Guillen
Bench Willy Taveras
Bench Nyjer Morgan
Bench Matt LaPorta

PITCHERS
SLOT PLAYER, TEAM POS
P Dan Haren
P Roy Halladay
P Jonathan Papelbon
P Javier Vazquez
P Chris Young
P Johnny Cueto
P Francisco Cordero
P Kevin Millwood
P Doug Davis
Bench Fausto Carmona
Bench Jordan Zimmermann
DL Chris Carpenter
DL John Lackey
DL Kelvim Escobar

Do you like the deal for me? I'd rather get a different pitcher, I reallydon't like Fausto in the least.... Thanks in advance and leave a link ;-D

First of all, thanks for help on mine...it was a very well thought out answer.

As for yours, IMO it is not even close to a good offer for you. Carmona is showing no sign of doing anything, Guillen will break down and seems to do less and less even when playing, and while I do like Maggs, I like Lowell almost as much and at a tougher position to fill.

Hope that helps.

***UPDATE***

I got him to offer Vazquez now instead of Fausto... I'm thinking that this may be a go, even thought I hate to give up Lowell as I expected a big year out of him...

So now it's
I give:
Hanson
Lowell

I get:
Mags
Vazquez
C. Guillen

Just need to get the approval of my fellow cafe members :-D, but it's looking a lot better to me..

The trade doesn't wow me enough to give up one of the best young arms in baseball as a last round keeper. Stay put
Don't think meat it can only hurt the team

Im no pro, but I don't think you should do it. I think Lowell will have a good year and it is a downgrade from Lowell to Guillen. I think your OF is pretty solid.

I think essentially you're trading a good pitching prospect and Lowell, for 2 aging stars and a good strike out pitcher.

The thing is, there is no promise that I will be keeping him... I only get 5 keepers, and there are a lot of other good value keepers on my team. I like McLouth (25th rndr next year), Bills (13th rnd next year), Kershaw (18th), Alexei (26th rnd), among others... Of course Hanson could come upand light the world on fire, but if he comes up and pitches poorly, I maynot keep him...

This isn't a dynasty league, I only get 5 keepers (out of 33 man rosters), and there really isn't anybody that I can guarantee I'l be keeping....

if you are sure you will not keep Hanson, the trade would work for you. Im sure the reason the offer is on the tableow is that Hanson is expected up in a few days/weeks and if he pitches well, his value rockets up. If you can let this offer sit until Hanson has a start or 2, you'll ahve a much better idea of what to give/get.
I expect him to be a stud, but probably not this year.

If he is now offering Javy, then I'd definitely do this. That is if you know your not keeping hanson. The first trade with carmona was a waste but this is better. I'd say do it.

Help with mine

Im a little leary....

I understand that Hanson is probably not a keeper in this format, but is the impact Maggs is going to make vs the downgrade at 3B offer enough offset the potential upsides if you stay where you are?
