Trading Miguel Cabrera

Postby Padres Fan » Mon May 04, 2009 6:52 pm

I am in a 12 team ESPN KEEPER AUCTION LEAGUE ROTO, we have a 3 year keeper limit and it's the 1st year.

My Offense is doing good, but my pitching is amazingly crappy, we get to keep up to 8 players at the end of season and I bought Miguel Cabrera for $42, and Adrian Gonzalez for $14 (Each season, when kept their value goes up $5, i.e. Miggy will be $47 2010, $52 2011, if not kept he goes back to auction pool)

Since Gonzo is having a good year, I figure since I can't afford to keep Miggy might see what I can get for him, to help my pitching.

I had a guy offer Dan Haren, Joey Votto, Dice K for Miguel Cabrera and Matt Capps, I am not high on Dice K, so I thought a Dan Haren, Joey Votto, Josh Johnson for Migule Cabrera and Matt Capps, and mybe include either JJ Hardy or Stephen Drew for Troy Tulowitzki as well.

My Team

C-Kurt Suzuki
C-Joe Mauer
1B-Miguel Cabrera
2B-Orlando Hudson
3B-Mark Teahen
SS-Edgar Renteria
MI-Alberto Callapso
CI-Adrian Gonzalez
OF-Andre Ethier
OF-Torii Hunter
OF-Denard Span
OF-Josh Anderson
OF-Shin-Soo Choo
UTIL-Jeremy Hermida

BN-JJ Hardy
BN-Garrett Atkins

DL-Stephen Drew
DL-Alex Gordon

P-Ted Lilly
P-Kevin Slowey
P-Matt Garza
P-Chris Young
P-Mark Buehrle
P-Gavin Floyd
P-Matt Lindstrom
P-Matt Capps
P-Brian Wilson

BN-David Price

His Team
C-Ivan Rodriguez
C-Jarrod Saltalamacchia
1B-Mark Teixeira
2B-Dan Uggla
3B-Evan Longoria
SS-Troy Tulowitzki
MI-Felipe Lopez
CI-Joey Votto
OF-Carlos Quentin
OF-Mike Cameron
OF-Willy Taveras
OF-BJ Upton
OF-Jay Bruce
UTIL-Carlos Pena
BN-Placido Polanco

P-Josh Beckett
P-Jon Lester
P-Erik Bedard
P-Josh Johnson
P-Troy Percival
P-Jason Frasor

Should I do this trade or what should I ask for, he says he is interested in aquiring a closer and wants Matt Capps and not Matt Lindstrom?

Well, I'm a Boston fan and don't like Dice-K either. Stay away. Your giving up a lot of offense in Miggy and not getting much back in Votto (yet). I love Josh Johnson, so a Haren, Johnson, Votto deal might work.

I'm not used to assessing Keeper league auctioning prices but I don't think you should do this deal. Giving up Cabrera and Capps for Votto, Haren, and Josh Johnson seems like too much of an offensive down-grade for me. I guess if you assess how much the players worth $$ you could be getting a bargain (for keepers). I'd only do this if you can afford to lose a lot of offense as I don't think Votto will keep hitting like this. I'd personally pursue another owner for pitching, as I think everyone would like to have Cabrera.

I did a email to the league yesterday, and so far only got the one reply, nothing is set in stone yet, I know Votto is a down grade from Miggy, but in a kepper aspect since Miggy will count towards $47 of my next years caps and Votto would count towards $20 and I also get some pitching help as well that could be keeper quality, I havent replied yet as I am waiting to see what the rest of the league has to offer 1st

this continues to be a very difficult question to answer....

1) would I downgrade talent just to save a few bucks? personally, no way - I try to win now and worry about the money aspect later

It's a long season, and anything can happen. You already paid $42 for him, knowing about this $5 increase, so I wouldn't bail on him easily. Shop him around for a while, and see what kind of offers you can get. Haren and Johnson will certainly help your pitching, but it's a huge hit to your offense, and I don't think you can sustain it. This trade wouldn't be a disaster and will free up some cap space, but I think you can do better. When going after pitching, remember that you have David Price on your bench. You don't have an offensive equivalent waiting to swoop in and help save the day, so don't go overboard giving away offense for pitching.

Thanks for the help with mine.

Its not that I am trying to cut costs, its me trying to get help for a weak spot on my lineup, and with Gonzo hitting the way he has been, and being a keeper for next season, I feel that Cabrera is a great trade chip to help my horrid pitching staff.
