My City Tries to Get "Hip"

I would like to know what your reactions are to something the city I live in has done. The city name is Gastonia and they have nicknamed themselves... "G-Town."

Gastonia was a recipient of a Preserve America grant administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior.

The city's project "Discovering Downtown: Preserving and Promoting Gastonia's Heritage" includes putting up signs to identify the Downtown Gastonia Historic District and Municipal Service District, and a walking tour linking the Downtown Historic District including a detailed brochure.

The first sign has been placed designating the new "G-town" logo. All of the street signs within the Municipal Service District will be replaced with new poles and signs specifically designating the historic district with the brown G-town signs, and the Municipal Service District with the green G-town signs. The poles are black with a small finial that is in keeping with the previously installed black lamp posts.

"The new signs give a hip look to our city streets," said Mayor Jennie Stultz. "We locals have called Gastonia ‘G-town' for decades. I think it shows our casual, friendly side."

What I am really trying to do is see if anyone has the same initial reaction that I did, or if I'm in the extreme minority.

So, have you called it G-town? Do many of the locals call it G-town? If so, I don't have a problem with it.
