Anyone hearing what his role will be when he returns? Will he be in the rotation or pen?

he signed a incentive laden contract based on being a starter, so he's under the assumption that he's going to be a starter at some point.

Ya I think Penny gets bumped to the pen when Smoltz returns.
Here's the pitch on the way, a swing and a belt! Left field! Way back! BLUE JAYS WIN!

The Red Sox shut down John Smoltz's rehab Thursday.
He will rejoin the team in Atlanta in order to rehabilitate his surgically repaired shoulder under the eye of the team's medical personnel. The team doesn't want Smoltz to pitch in a minor league before he's truly ready, as they fear he may not hold back in game conditions. The Sox said that Smoltz isn't injured and is still on course to return in early June.

Would this make Buchholz a nice speculative add?

Maybe, but not based on that news update. Smoltz wasn't due to be called up until June anyways.
