Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

You're really new to the sport? There are a number of situations where a batter won't be credited with an AB. The two main ones are Base on Balls (Walks) and Sacrifices. Each of these count as a Plate Appearance but not an At Bat. If you have a batter get no hits but walked twice his line would be 0-for-2. Another situation where it might seem to be out of sequence is when there is a pinch hitter or a substitution.

It would be 0 (zero) Hits for 2 At Bats but 4 Plate Appearances.
