Timeline for David Price?

Postby RaginCajun77 » Fri Apr 24, 2009 11:00 pm

I just grabbed Price off waivers in a 5 x 5 Roto league which we can only hold 5 SP's. I am willing to wait for his production because I think it will pay off in the long haul. Anyway, does anyone out there have any insight on when Price will get the call up for the Rays this year?

No insight, just speculation, but I would imagine May sometime, first week in June at the latest. There are obviously financial implications to keeping him in the minors and slowing down the his big league service time, at the same time, in the ultra competitive AL East, as soon as the feel like he'll pass super 2 status time, I'd imagine he'll get a rotation spot (namely Niemann's). Like I said, just speculation. If the Rays were a team that didn't feel like they could win, I'd be more concerned about him sitting down there longer, but being that they should be in the AL East hunt again this year, I wouldn't be that concerned, definitely stash. Good start in AAA.

I forget where but I actually read Sonnanstine might be in more trouble because he's been their worst SP. Whether Price gets the call early will probably depend on how far behind tampa gets, but you're right it could be before June.

But since Price pitched last year briefly for Tampa Bay, isn't his arbitration clock already ticking? :-?

I hesitated to discuss his arbitration clock ticking because I don't know all the aspects of it, but I do know that it is different if guys are called up after roster expansions, and I believe that was the case with Price last year. I also believe that the clock stops ticking if a guy gets sent back down, but I'm not 100% sure about that. I know that there are cafe members that know much more about the arbitration process then I, and I hope they'll respond to this thread.

Sonnanstine has been torched lately. He has got to be close. It wouldn't surprise me if Wade Davis or one of the other young guns were called up before the All-Star Break. I have been unimpressed with the back end of the Rays rotation this year.

Sonny has struggled, but Niemann has been decent minus the first inning of the year, but of course we are only talking about 3 games so far as well.
