While the Marlins were getting swept Wednesday in Pittsburgh, 1B Jorge Cantu saw a hand specialist in South Florida. The team got good news — no fractures or ligament tears in his left hand.
“Just a bruise. Nothing major,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “Nothing wrong with the wrist or the cartilage or the bones and he’ll join us Friday.”
But that doesn’t mean he’ll play Friday. The Marlisn are leaning toward resting him one more day.
“He’s a tough son-of-a-gun,” Gonzalez said. “He wants to get in there but we’ll maybe give him an extra day.”
The Marlins sure can use Cantu. He’s leading the team with a .341 batting average and has has hit in 8 of the last 10 games. But he has been playing through pain since the third game of the season when he was hit in back of the hand by a pitch.
The Marlins don’t expect the problem to linger much longer. If it does, Gaby Sanchez could be the insurance policy.
