Pedro Martinez and Ben Sheets Question

Postby RDD15 » Tue Apr 21, 2009 7:42 pm

This recently came up in one of my leagues.

We allow 2 "Injured" spots in our league, and 7 Minor League spots.

Ben Sheets was placed in an "Injured" spot despite not being on the DL. Players have been allowed in injured spots in the past without a stay on the DL if indeed they were missing games because of injury.

Pedro Martinez was placed in a "Minors" spot also.

The constitution for this league is nearly non-existant. In order to keep a player on the minors roster in the offseason, they must have played less than 100 games as a position player, or pitched in less than 30 games OR less than 18 games started.

I think that Sheets being on the injured list despite him not being on the DL is fair given precedent. But do you folks believe that Pedro should or should not be allowed to be carried on a team's Minors roster currently?

Not.

I also think Sheets is fishy since he doesn't have a team.
0-3 to 4-3. Worst choke in the history of baseball. Enough said.

In our league, if they aren't on a MLB roster, they can't be on your roster.

First thing..need a constitution.

What I would say right now is that you're stuck with it unfortunately. Kudos to said owner(s) for finding the loophole I guess?

Rule change prior to next year that a player has to be on a MLB team's DL to be in an Injured spot.

Hate that rule. If someone wanted to invest in Shef this year (before he signed), or Sheets, or Bonds the last couple, then they should be allowed to. ESPECIALLY in a keeper or dynasty style leagues. It would be ridiculous to tell me I lose a player like Sheets because he is a free agent. Whats your cut off. Is someone who is unsigned at the start of camp not allowed to be kept/drafted?

That said, they need to take the roster spot hit since the player isnt actually on the DL.

That said, minors should stick to whatever your constitution is. I know in my league there are a couple players being illegally kept, and the moment I want one of them Ill call the guy on it.

agree on sheets should not be allowed to be kept on DL since he is not on a team's DL. waste a roster spot if you want him.. but as it has been done before apparantly you will have to wait until this coming offseason to address it...not now

same w pedro...should not be allowed, as per any constitution made anywhere he would not be eligible...but again would have to address it in the offseason(this is assuming pedro is in somebody's minor league system right now....i have no idea and am too lazy to look it up, just using context clues). if he is unsigned...i say no on minor league for him right now and would bring it up now

the Pedro thing does not need to wait until the off season as him taking a minors spot is clearly against your rules.

the Sheets thing should likely stand in your league as it has been done in the past. but as others have said a player needs to be on a MLB DL in order for them to be on a fantasy team DL.

Of course they need a constitution but the sheets situation seems like one where people are answering what they think it SHOULD be as opposed to what it is in this situation. If they want to allow players who are missing time to go in injured spots regardless of DL (which it appears they do) that is fine and sheets should be allowed in there. However, the Pedro situation does seem incorrect. Even if your rule is applicable to each preceding season (a really weird choice for minor league eligibility IMO) then Pedro still started 20 games last year.
