Is it too early to give up on Matsui? WHIR

Postby etex211 » Sun Apr 19, 2009 9:38 pm

Matsui is my DH in a 18 team 5x5 roto league. The news that I've been reading about his knees isn't good at all. It would appear that he could be nearing the end.

There really aren't any other DH's available on the waiver wire in this league, but I could scrap the DH entirely in favor of an extra pitcher. The following starting pitchers are available:

Zach Duke
Mike Hampton
Tim Wakefield
Jason Marquis
Dallas Braden

If I make a move, Duke would probably be my first choice. Pull the trigger?

Also, what does everyone think about having a DH vs. having an extra pitcher?

i don't play in a league with a DH, but i wouldn't want to leave that spot empty everyday. is there absolutely no one available? cust, blalock, even travis snider? if your batting is strong enough to do that, then okay i guess. i just wouldn't play w/out having all my roster spots filled.

Yes, the cubboard is bare. The following list is all of the guys that are available that have DH elgibiilty and 2009 at bats:

Mike Sweeney
Marcus Thames
Craig Monroe
Jeff Larish
Matt Stairs
Chris Carter

About half the teams in this league have a DH and the other half have an extra pitcher.

I won the league last year carrying around Gary Sheffield's dead weight most of the year as my DH.

If I liked one of those SPs, it might be easier to make that move. I do like Wakefield more than Duke for the wins, and his other numbers are usually decent. But nobody there is worth jumping on immediately.

I don't see a better bat than Matsui, either, though I'm not very high on him. I'd probably hold onto him for a couple weeks and see if you see any improvement. With Nady out, he should continue to play. If the Yanks actually shut him down or he shows no improvement, then go with the hot pitcher in a few weeks.

Help if you can?

I'm biased as a Yankee fan, but I'd hold onto Matsui. He's starting to have some decent ABs and is finally getting a few hits. Of course, those knees will be bothering him all year, which is going to cut his production some. But I see no reason he can't be an effective DH, especially in an 18-teamer.

Call me crazy, but I like Hampton out of the pitchers mentioned. He has quite a bit of upside.
