Video replay. Don't know the results yet or what the options for the umpires are, but that should be an OUT, not a HR or anything else. The fan reached out and hit the outfielder's glove with his glove right where the ball ended up.
I'm about 99% sure that would have been caught by the outfielder. The fan CLEARLY reached out into the field...very obvious just looking at the shadows, in fact.
obviously would have been caught. but maybe there is something wrong with the replay rules. both TBS analysts disagree with the call. it just must be that it is impossible to ever overturn such a play.
I watched that replay a bunch of times, and I'm a Yankee fan who is glad it was called a HR.
But I think you are both crazy if you think the replay shows 100% one or or another. This example shows how even replay can't be perfect. You can interpret this either way. Perhaps it came down into the stands and bounced off of the fans chest, making it a home run. Or perhaps the fan is leaning over so much and hits the ball with his glove in which it was interference.
No way it is 100% sure either way. I bet if we did a poll we would get about 1/3 say HR, about 1/3 saying interference, and about 1/3 saying they didn't know.
There are a few things with the New York Yankees that never change. That's pride, tradition, and most of all, we have the greatest fans in the world. -Derek Jeter, 9/21/08 -- last words from old Yankee Stadium

Oh, I agree completely. I'm just saying if I'm forced to pick one way or another, I think it's a HR.
right. the problem is that if that isn't fan interference, then you can never prove fan interference. that is as clear as it gets. whether "as clear as it gets" means 80% or 90% or 99% can be debated, but it will really never be any more clear, so they should just scrap the fan interference rule, on replays at the very least.
