The only other video from this show that I've seen was a couple years ago when some ugly, chubby guy with bad teeth sang his ass off in a similar manner. The shock doesn't seem to be coming from the fact that they are good singers, as there are a lot of good singers on these types of shows, the shock seems to be that they are ugly and good singers. As if it's so amazing and absolutely astounding that someone who isn't physically attractive could possess this kind of talent. To be clear, I think this lady is an amazing singer, and there would have been a reaction had she been pretty, or even "average" looking, but I doubt it would be all over the internet and on World News Tonight with Charlie Gibson (where I first saw this). People seem amazed that someone who is fat and ugly can do something other than sit there being fat and ugly.

On angel wings I will rise above your hate, and catapult towards the sun that I pray is hot enough to melt your igloo.
Hope you've got fireproof wings.
What a crazy thread.
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....

Seriously, I did not think it was that great. It was an overly emotional show tune with the background music up too high. It didn't make me say wow. It sounds like she hit the right notes but it was otherwise blah. For her for me dawg there's nothing special about her voice.
When you say "first time singing in public like that, big stage, alone" you're asking about whether she did well for her. Yeah, probably. Only b/c everyone expected her to suck. So when you cut through the crap, all of the gushing about her is really patronizing.
I agree with you. She's a good singer, but she's not nearly on the same level as people like the broadway singers who actually sing in Les Mis. I could see her moving on to the next round, but she didn't really deserve the judge's "biggest yes ever".
I actually disagree. While some people in this thread are very wrong, there are a good amount that are absolutely right, and a few that have no idea what they are talking about which is really kinda sad. Even though I thoroughly disagree with those that are wrong I really value their opinion. I wholeheartedly agree with those that are right, you have really done your homework and I commend you. I'm indifferent about those that don't know what they're talking about, but would like to urge them to educate themselves on the subject.
