Pitching on its head this season

Postby Carey Saders » Mon Apr 13, 2009 10:17 pm

The season is young but there have been some surprisingly bad starts. Does 2009 seem more unpredictable than previous years?

Nope, for how bad Pavano was his first start, I remember Dewon Brazelton's a couple years ago as being worse

That is the beast known as pitching. It's always unpredictable. That's also the reason that drafting pitchers in early rounds is taking a greater risk.

If we get a week like this in mid July, nobody notices. Of course, it always looks worse when everybody is starting from zero.

I seem to remember quite a few bad performances every year at this time. Some pitchers are still getting back into their rhythm. Lester - yuk.

I remember this thread from last year...

Some starters will be terrible in the beginning. Others great, it will even out.
...Boston papers now and then suffer a sharp flurry of arithmetic on this score; indeed, for Williams to have distributed all his hits so they did nobody else any good would constitute a feat of placement unparalleled in the annals of selfishness. -Updike

Sure - some bad starts, but some hitters are off to terrible starts too.

In top 25:
Braun: BA .208 and no HR
Rollins: BA .107 and no HR/SB
Berkman: BA .200 1HR

So I am not sure it really says anything so early in the season.
