4 k's in an inning (answered)

Postby Arlo » Sun May 19, 2002 5:44 pm

Every once in a while, a pitcher strikes out four batters in a single inning, bringing a huge grin to their fantasy owners' faces. Last year, for example, both Eric Hiljus and Frankie Rodriguez accomplished this feat.

Only one pitcher has ever done this more than once, and he's done it three times. Who?

Hmm... this seems like too obvious an answer, so it's probably not right, but I'll have to say Nolan Ryan. He really struggled with his control early in his career, but always had the velocity. I could see him striking out 6 men in an inning, the way he used to throw.

Good guess, but no. I agree that Ryan's style would make him a prime candidate, but he never actually accomplished this "feat."

Nope, it was more recent than the Bird's day. The pitcher you're looking for is still active.

Greg Maddux? He has impeccable control, so I doubt it, but he's the only pitcher more recent than Fidrych (one day, I'll learn how to spell that) that I can think of being mentioned on this board.
