Marlins: Lowell to undergo a bone scan
The News
Third baseman Mike Lowell will undergo a bone scan on Thursday in the continuing effort to find out more about his ailing right elbow. Lowell had an MRI earlier this week, and the test showed swelling but no structural damage. The joint has bothered Lowell since the August of 2003, and he is currently resting for a few days. "Physically, I'm not worried about being ready for the season," he told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "I'm not worried about the time. I know my swing will be ready by Opening Day." Lowell previously said that the elbow was only a problem in the field, but he recently admitted that he feels pain when he swings as well. He noted that it usually takes 10-to-15 swings to loosen up the joint. "I don't want that to become 20 or 25 swings and before you know it I have to take 100 swings in pain before I feel good," Lowell said. "I want to just get rid of this and move on."
Our View
We'll let you know the results of the test, which Lowell expects to show nothing out of the ordinary. The more that this issue lingers, the more that we worry about his status for the season. Mike previously said that he would opt to play through the pain rather than have surgery, but his comments above suggest that his resolve is wearing down. Fantasy owners definitely need to check back for the latest info on Lowell prior to their draft or auction.
