Verlander's back

Postby jjs » Sat Apr 11, 2009 2:55 pm

I know everybody is down on him, escpecially after his last outing. But watching the last game and todays' game, he reminds me of the pitcher from 2 years ago. He's throwing 95-98 with ease. Once he gets a few of the kinks worked out with how he wants to attack hitters, WATCH OUT. He pitched today exactly how he looked when he threw that no-hitter 2 years ago. And against a great lineup.

97 pitches through 5IP and 4 walks mixed in....he's still got plenty of work to do. But I hope he can figure it out...he'd be one of the best pitchers in the league if his stuff translated into performance.

+1.

He looked great, but he still has some work to do for sure. If he can cut down on those walks and locate his pitches a little more effectively then he could be the pitcher he was 2 years ago. Today's outing was definitely encouraging though, and I am willing to give him time to work things out considering I got him in the later rounds ;-D

That. The line is encouraging, but I'm still not sticking him into my lineup for his next start. He's still a wait-and-see imo.

He was facing Texas, I'm pretty satisfied with him just not getting destroyed.

As long as you realize his first big year had a lot of luck involved so you shouldn't expect him to be quite that good. The infield defense improved this year so that should help him somewhat too.

Couple of observations about today's performance:

- Getting back to throwing the fastball. This is huge. He finally got his mix back. Some of this may be Chuck Hernandez out of his head. Some of this may be Laird behind the plate. Some of this may just be chance or his own focus. But 70+% fastballs is this guy's game. Any less than that and he's struggling in his head.

- Good movement, but a little shaky on location.

- Needs to learn to relax with guys on base. It seems he gets distracted easily by this, and it shows in his location. I think this was one of the things that kept turning what should have been small innings into big innings against him last year.

- Wtf is with Inge/Everett? Two errors in one inning? Out of two guys who are supposedly "defensive specialists". Those errors is what cost Verlander the win today, as well as kept him from pitching the sixth (and possibly the seventh). That was an extra 15-20 pitches in that inning.

-Wtf is with Leyland? Yeah, the fifth was a struggle... but this is supposed to be your "ace" isn't it? So you pull him before he even gets to 100 pitches? Garbage. He was dominating all day, and his stuff seemed to be getting better as the game went on. So you pull him in the fifth? For what? To keep him from getting the loss? To bring in Robertson because of the lefties in the sixth? You're going to need a better reason than that if this guy is supposed to be your horse.

He was unlucky last year and pitched very good in 07. His FIP for those 3 seasons sum it up. So I fail to see your point. He was hung out to dry today in the 5th by two routine grounders that landed up being errors and made him pitch another 15-20 pitches, stressfull pitches at that. He prolly goes 7 innings 2-3bb , 3-4 hits, 9-10k's with a win if the first error is played for an out. Hell even the second one. He needs to sharpen up the fastball command a touch though. Other than that, he had dominant stuff today vs a potent lineup.

He had two errors mixed in, that cost him an inning.

He looked very good.
