Travis Hafner over Delmon Young?

Postby Verundia » Sat Apr 11, 2009 10:49 am

Hafner is still there in my league and I need some occasional power from my UT slots (at least until milly starts to contribute... :~( ).
Should I pick him in place of the oft-benched Young or should I wait? Is Pronk's power surge for real?

12 teams, H2H league. Hitting Cats: R, H, HR, RBI, SB, BB, K, TB, E
My roster:

    C Pablo Sandoval
    1B Adrian Gonzalez
    2B Ian Kinsler
    3B David Wright
    SS Alexei Ramirez
    OF Matt Holliday
    OF Alex Rios
    OF Brad Hawpe
    Util Lastings Milledge
    Util Nelson Cruz

    BN Snyder (C)
    BN Edwin Encarnacion (3B)
    BN Emmanuel Burriss (2B,SS)
    BN Paul Konerko (1B)
    BN Delmon Young (OF)

Some other tempting FAs:
Choo, Cameron, Teahen (W apr 12), Kubel, Thames, Joyce.

I have far enough depht in the OFs so I can effort dropping Young.
I'd also like to cut the K mountain eventually...what would you do?

I think 5 bench hitters is way too much for h2h. You should have 1, maybe 2, and focus the rest of your efforts on pitching depth. But yes, I would drop Young (or Synder or Burriss) for Hafner. Especially because you have 2 UTIL slots.

Help with mine?

Yes 5 bench hitters are quite a lot, but I'm fine with my pitchers. I've got Lincecum, Volquez, Vazquez, Pelfrey and Penny. Tommy Hanson in bench, Ervin Santana and Scherzer in DL. Once they return to linup, I will drop Penny and a hitter, and sit there waiting Hanson's arrival :-b

Yes, I'd make the switch, Hafner's looking good so far and Young isn't getting the playing time to make it worth putting him in your lineup.

So...gotta risk Pronk even over Choo or Teahen?

Hafner 0/3 so far today with 3 K....

Meanwhile Choo 1/1 with a double, 2 BB and a SB, Young 1/2 with a homer... :-S

What about this same question right now in 2010? Hafner and Young were fairly similar busts last year, but Young off to a hot 2 HR start and pronk after a decent spring is an 0-fer. I have pronk now, but Young is on the waiver... This is a 23 player roster head-to-head. My problem with Hafner right now is that unless Mauer or Wieters has the day off he can't even get in the game as he only plays UTIL.

Joe Mauer (C)
Kevin Youkilis (1B)
Aaron Hill (2B)
Evan Longoria (3B)
Ben Zobrist (SS)
Derrek Lee (IF)
Bobby Abreu (LF)
Colby Rasmus (CF)
Nick Markakis (RF)
Raúl Ibañez (OF)
Matt Wieters (UTIL)

Travis Hafner (BN UTIL)
Erick Aybar (BN SS)
Austin Jackson (BN CF/OF)
