Yahoo's Cultural/Language Sensitivity getting on my nerves

Postby Chopper » Thu Mar 11, 2004 1:40 pm

Anybody try to find Rodriguez or Cintron or Beltran or Lopez or most any other Hispanic player in Yahoo lately?
I can't argue with the attempt to display the names correctly, but its getting very difficult to find any player by searching. It doesn't help that their rankings don't give a clue as to where you might start looking.
Am I too insensitive if I ask that they forego the accents?
Blessed are the cheesemakers.

Yahoo-The New Arian Nation

My personal favorite:

"&. Renteria"

Unless they've changed it, that's how he was listed yesterday!

Someone write them a letter!

It's absolutely despicable! (no pun intended)

there was also & Rodriguez, the new SS for the yankees.

they did this accent thing last year during the season for about a week and then switched back. i think they did it the year before. i dont care if they display the names that way but you should be able to search without the accents.

for right now you can just search by partial name and then pick the name out of a list.

I'm fine with keeping the names as they should be (with accents and whatnot), but they just need to change their search so that it's insensitive to that kind of stuff.

I mean come on, who knows the keyboard codes for è?

Doesn't work for guys like Pena, you have to have at least 3 letters of the last name...you can only search by position for these guys

Apparently you do :-D

I remember them doing this last year and quickly switching back. I can't imagine it would stay like this, it's ridiculous. I typed "belt" for Beltran and I didn't get Adrian Beltre. I don't know why they do this...........maybe there's an ulterior motive, such as lowering unneccesary traffic or something. Or appeasing hispanic members..........who knows.

In addition, many of the accent marks are incorrect. As a student of Spanish for seven years, I'm certain that "Cintron" does not have an accent mark over the "o", as is portrayed in Yahoo!. In the Spanish language, the name Cintron is pronounced naturally with the second syllable accented, because of the rules of the language.

Does anyone in MLB have a name with a grave accent mark?

Danny Graves :-? ................. :-B

What's a grave accent mark anyway? Is it like a ^ over a letter? or a ' ' over a letter, like in Motley Crue?

Either way I don't know.
