This is my first year doing fantasy baseball. I am trying to learn how it all works but any advice would help and as I come across questions this seems to be the place to get answers. To start off, I am in an ESPN Standard League. 10 teams, roto-style scoring, just standard. If you need to know more about the league to help then I'll put more. We start all of my offensive players and 9 pitchers. I drafted 3 bench pitchers because I wasn't sure who to get for bench players. Some questions:
1) How do I look in each category and what (if anything) would you recommend changing? 2) What is the best way to rotate pitchers with starters and relievers? 3) Should I change up some of my bench players or keep 3 pitchers?
Thanks for all the help!
Here is my roster:
C - Brian McCann 1B - Prince Fielder 2B - Brandon Phillips 3B - David Wright SS - Jimmy Rollins 2B/SS - Troy Tulowitzki 1B/3B - Adrian Gonzalez OF - Jason Bay OF - Jay Bruce OF - Brad Hawpe OF - Lastings Milledge OF - Carlos Gomez DH - David Ortiz
P - Tim Lincecum P - Chad Billingsley P - Yovani Gallardo P - Jose Valverde (RP) P - Adam Wainwright P - Matt Cain P - Ricky Nolasco P - Chad Qualls (RP) P - Joel Hanrahan (RP) P - Josh Johnson P - Gil Meche P - Erik Bedard
Is the rest of the league made up of first timers too? David Wright, Prince Fielder and Jimmy Rollins are 1st rounders. Tim Lincicum also has been taken in 1st round too. That is 4 guys who could be 1st rounder. You have a good team. You will have a good team hitting and pitching you are pretty deep. I would probaly drop 2 or 3 of your pitchers and get a bench for hitting

Offense-your Infield is a beast, your Outfield is shaky as who knows what Bruce will do and Milledge is a little bit iffy, Carlos Gomez is in a Crowded outfield/DH situation in Minnesoat and unlees he he hits good may be moved to 4th OF, I also think Ortiz is in a decline
Pitching-Could be better fro a 10 teamer, but otherwise solid, Hanrahan plays for a horrible team, not many saves there, but look what Soria did last season, and Bedard is injury prone
It is a league of first timers. A group of us got together and most have little experience like me. They drafted more for names where I drafted more based on rankings. I had 5th pick in a snake order but ended up with some pretty good guys, I thought. My strategy was to fill my infield and have one solid pitcher and outfielder and then fill in the pitching and outfield. I think it worked out pretty well for me.
What categories will I be weak in and should I look at improving? If I should drop pitchers, who would you drop and what positions would you look at picking up? Thanks for the input.
* Padres fan, I would love to help you out on yours but this is my first year so I am just learning about all this. Good luck though!
Not sure how standard Roto scoring usually works since I'm usually in H2H leagues, but if you have any categories for pitching ratios (ERA, WHIP, etc.) it might be a good idea to swap one of your lower tier SP for a really good setup man...they're great for keeping your ratios down, as well as providing a K per inning, plus the occasional save or win. It's worked for me.
Other than that, I'd say you have a great starting lineup already...give that a few weeks and see how it settles.

Cheers
2 great starting pitchers usually on waivers to grabe that helps with ERA/WHIP are Paul Maholm and Kuroda, as for great RP that will help ERA/WHIP/K'a and may vulture a few saves and when (used as a starter for a few games last year) is Kuo of LAD
