he only caught a couple of the last games of spring still recovering from shoulder surgery...altho he was supposed to be ready 4 opening day...maybe its just mathis' turn.

--Jeff Mathis making the start at catcher over Mike Napoli - which has less to do with Napoli's health and more to do with Mathis' spring performance.

"I think Jeff has had a terrific spring," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "They both had the potential to start tonight but I think Jeff is the guy out of the gate that has had a great spring and we want to see where he is. We're going to need them both. He'll get the nod tonight, and then we'll move forward and see how everything falls into place."

Napoli will catch this week, Scioscia insisted - just not tonight.

Also they started Vlad at DH (because he had a late chest muscle flare-up) - the spot where Napoli will get a big percentage of his starts
