According to the St. Petersburg Times, Jason Hammel was told he's been traded to the Rockies. No word on the return yet, but Aneury Rodriguez was the name getting mentioned yesterday. Hammel's departure will make Jeff Niemann the Rays' fifth starter and open up a bullpen spot for Lance Cormier.

I don't think Niemann holds the job too long over Price. His velocity has lost some speed the last couple years, enough to question whether he would be more serviceable out of the pen instead of the rotation. I don't think it takes Price long to unseat him.

Great question. Does Hammel immediately join the rotation? If so, does De La Rosa get the boot or Marquis or Morales?
I think he'll start out as the long man in the bullpen, and be the first in line to replace De La Rosa or Morales if they struggle. I think he's a nice depth move for the Rockies, but nothing more than that. I'm more confident he can step in for an injury or bad pitching from the starting rotation than the depth down in AAA right now.
